Historia
The darkest and most disturbing case report from the files of Kinsey Millhone, Y begins in 1979, when four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a 14-year-old classmate - and film the attack. Not long after, the tape goes missing, and the suspected thief, a fellow classmate, is murdered. In the investigation that follows, one boy turns state's evidence, and two of his peers are convicted. But the ringleader escapes without a trace.

So-so
Revisado: 02-22-24
Not the best of Grafton's novels.
The story was fine and kept me interested throughout. The characters were well drawn.
As for the writing overall, the pacing was off in places, especially in dramatic moments. An editor could have helped Grafton by pointing out areas needing a little more work.
I didn't care for the narration.

Historia
Tom Wolfe's best-selling modern classic tells the story of Sherman McCoy, an elite Wall Street bond trader who has it all: wealth, power, prestige, a Park Avenue apartment, a beautiful wife, and an even more beautiful mistress - until one wrong turn sends Sherman spiraling downward into a humiliating fall from grace. A car accident in the Bronx involving Sherman, his girlfriend, and two young lower-class Black men sets a match to the incendiary racial and social tensions of 1980s New York City.

Rediscovering Wolfe

Great satire in admirable prose. The narration by Joe Barrett is outstanding -- the accents, voices and sounds of the assembled cast. Altogether a treat.

According to Goldberg, if the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist, the greatest trick liberals ever pulled was convincing themselves they’re not ideological. Today “objective” journalists and academics and “moderate” politicians peddle some of the most radical arguments by hiding them in homespun aphorisms.

Really made me think
Revisado: 11-06-16
I was inspired by Jonah Goldberg's The Tyranny Of Clichés. In the book Goldberg shows you why some ideas that we generally take for granted can turn out not to be true. The clichés. Which, it turns out, have been drummed into our heads until we accept them without question. That's where the tyranny comes in. Goldberg does a great job of describing the consequences of blindly following these clichés. He reasons clearly and with a good dose of humor thrown in. This is one of those books you know you will read again. Must read again, because there's so much in it that invites a thorough thinking through. I read the audiobook version (while painting) so will add that Goldberg did a great job of narration.

Historia
These wide-ranging essays - on many individual political, economic, cultural, and legal issues - have as a recurring, underlying theme the decline of the values and institutions that have sustained and advanced American society for more than two centuries. This decline has been more than erosion. It has, in many cases, been a deliberate dismantling of American values and institutions by people convinced that their superior wisdom and virtue must override both the traditions of the country and the will of the people.

A Black Conservative I Greatly Admire
Revisado: 06-27-15
One of the best books (compilation of op-ed pieces) I've ever read. Sowell's descriptions and analyses show good old common sense and are easy to follow. He is presently a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. Being an economist, he has great insight into how the economy responds when politicians try to control it.
Sowell predicted that, given a second term, President Obama would dismantle America. Obama sees it as "transforming" America. But his transformation is not good for America and the world. I have to believe that we will find our way back to conservative principles that ensure opportunities and jobs for all, especially for blacks and poor folks.
Also, the reader was excellent!

Historia
From three-time Edgar Award-winning mystery writer Ruth Rendell comes a captivating tale of residents and servants on one block of a posh London street - and the deadly ways their lives intertwine. Life in the well-manicured London locale of Hexam Place is not as placid and orderly as it appears. Behind the tranquil gardens and polished entryways, relationships between servants and their employers are set to combust. Henry, the handsome valet to Lord Studley, is sleeping with both the Lord's wife and his university-age daughter.

Very Disappointing
Revisado: 04-16-13
I am a huge Ruth Rendell fan. This is the worst of her novels that I've read. "St. Vita" skims across the surface, never delving deeply into any of the characters. There's a full cast of characters doing things that *could* be interesting but aren't. It took me weeks to read all the way through, because I kept getting confused about who was doing what and why. I kept thinking that I must have missed some vital passages. But no. Sad, as I love Ruth Rendell. But everyone's entitled to a miss from time to time. And I'll keep reading her novels. The narrator did a fine job.
