missing parts!
Revisado: 09-18-24
This has been a favorite book of mine for ever, I was happy to find it here. was so disappointed when I discovered (my fault) it was abridged but - worse the recording didn't play properly. seems to be missing parts, or it's in the wrong order. these are really good southern fiction stories (Lee Smith, Anne Siddons) and I do wish you'd re present them and clean up the videos. they might then be noticed by the many readers who enjoy southern fiction. put them on the top shelf and steer your customers to them. they'll come back for more.

She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

So well written, research is amazing, great resources- plus it's a book I didn't want to end, it was that mesmerizing. And the narrator gave a faultless performance, she has an easy clear voice that was a pleasure too listen to.

Historia
Home Fires is the powerful saga of the Gordon family--real people, names unchanged. Spanning nearly five decades, from the end of World War II to the early 1990s, their story has the scope, depth, wealth of incident, and emotional intensity of a great novel, and an abundance of humor, scandal, warmth, and trauma--the recognizable components of family life. This is also a masterful chronicle of the turbulent postwar era, illuminating the interplay between private life and profound cultural changes.

Revisado: 01-11-24
I became confused early on- surely this wasn't meant for "grown ups", surely it wasn't written by the same author of the riveting Silent Patient...I felt as though I'd mistakenly bought a Nancy Drew book-- boring story, little girl breathy narration- it was almost impossible to finish. this author can do so much better-- I hope he does going forward.

Historia
Paul was reading a newspaper. Catherine was reading a novel. So begins Room on the Sea, André Aciman's scorching and elegiac love-story about a middle-aged man and woman who meet in the bullpen of jury selection and spend a sultry summer’s week trespassing ever further into each other's hearts. What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something deeper, something Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret - and with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question.

unusual for me, but I am without words (almost). this book is a jewel. I haven't read one of this quality in so very many years. if I said you have to read it or listen to it to understand what I'm saying- you do. And then it will be yours, too, to have hold and savor.
the words are perfection, a gift from author Andre Aciman , and Jeff Daniels tone and voice was and will be always the voice of the enchanting Paul.

Show Dont Tell
Revisado: 07-01-20
it wasn't far into this book when I figured out what was wrong with this book: a writer needs to make the reader feel what the character feels - not tell the reader how the characters feel. if the character says " I am utterly terrified! The Slasher is near! I want to scream in terror!" that's just not effective.
The practiced writer knows s/he must make the reader feel as terrified as the character claims to be.
Make me feel something! yes please do.
7 plus hours of *telling* me leaves me cold and unchanged. No better off for having listened to this book.
The narrator- she's not good with voices. I'm assuming there's more than 1 character but they all sound alike.
Very disappointed in this book. At best I was hoping for a book along the lines of the Ingrid Bergman film, "Gaslight." if not that then something middling, for my money.
Sadly this book didn't even reach middling.
5 stars? I must be looking in the wrong genre.

he continues to enthrall me. I bit my lip till it bled listening to Bullet Park. you get to know these characters from a sideways direction, not the usual. But Cheever is not the usual writer. Can't say more without spoiling -- if you havent read it or listened to it, do. oh -- I very much liked the reader. he is exactly right for the book.

Revisado: 10-14-18
it's still a favorite. loved to listen to it, o'hara's ear into how people speak is such a pleasure to hear, Samarra lends itself well to reading aloud. and I loved this narrator, everything about his reading was just perfectly done. jazzy, yet not too much. Camarga is and will forever be Julian English.
