Trying too hard for intrigue

This was long and had too many side stories. It tried too hard for intrigue and to me, it failed. Just before I was able to get into a story line, it switched to another story line preventing me from growing attached to a character or their plight. Instead, I had to take notes because I kept forgetting which character was doing what and to which family they belonged. It felt more like homework rather than enjoying an author's story. I like to listen when doing housework or in the car. At times, this was distracting and frustrating instead of enjoyable. This book got confusing at times and that detracted from the complete story. I think this would have been better divided into 3 or 4 different books focusing on certain characters. Toward the end, I just wanted it to be over.

I only got this book because it was connected with Mercedes Lackey and I'm not sure how much she was able to participate since I enjoy her books, but I didn't enjoy this one.

I was pleasantly surprised by this story. Lately, it seems like the romance books tend to be more about a man abusing his love interest, but not this one. The female character did have trauma she was dealing with, but the male character accepted it and tried to help her deal with it. Great story.

The main two characters were difficult to care about. The male was a stubborn jerk. The female was whiny and came off as weak. It was frustrating to listen to and I would have stopped, but I was curious about some of the other characters. The story that occurred in the land of the dead was slow going dotted with the male's stubbornness and the female's weakness.

Good & Bad

Let me start with the bad. It's creepy to have sexual scenes in a child murder book. I did like that two people found love, but I found it unsettling that it was in a book of murdered boys.

The sex scenes seemed to halt the story. It didn't flow well, and I got the impression that the author was more interested in describing the sex scenes than forwarding the story. Just listening to the audiobook, I found the story was a bit jarring from the descriptive sex scenes to almost a glossing over of the story line. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to focus on the story and I drifted off thinking of other things during the reading. Because of that, there were a few things I was confused about.

I did not like the violence against a loved one, domestic violence, and how the father tried to warn the son about it when the father was emotionally abusive as well. I think many of the characters needed therapy and wondered if the "flawed" people were supposed to add to the story. They didn't for me.

The good part was that the story had an interesting premise. A traumatized and rejected psychic puts his own pain on hold to find missing boys.

Cliffhanger

I'm not a fan of cliffhangers at the end of the book. Life gets busy and often, I'm unable to get to the next book in the series. A cliffhanger at the end of the chapter can keep me hooked, but not at the end of the book. To me, it feels like the book doesn't have an ending and it's a gimmick to get people to get the next book. Good authors don't need gimmicks to get people to read the next book.

So, don't listen if you like endings.

I couldn't finish it. Don't waste your time. Very disappointing. Just kids playing games, no real plot.

The problem with books that have multiple subplots run through several volumes is that they seem to get chaotic or messy. The father of Violet's children has been a bother for several volumes with no conclusion. Her sister continues to mess with Violet's life from sleeping with past boyfriends to stealing Violet's identity and marrying someone for his money. Violet's co-worker used to sexually harass her and eventually got fired because he helped another realtor steal one of Violet's clients. He still comes in to threaten Violet. These subplots have not been resolved and just seem to be filler since more than anything that moves the story forward.

Her mother's emotional abuse is extremely outrageous. She continues to support Susan hoping her love will help Susan get to some sense of normalcy. Really? So, she supports the dysfunctional child while emotionally abusing the child, Violet, whose life is somewhat put together. Susan has no need to improve herself because there's no consequences for her actions. I'm not sure why Violet doesn't distance herself from her mother's abuse since her mother won't change.

I say somewhat because Violet is in need of some therapy. She's deeply insecure and constantly worried about losing her boyfriend, Doc. Violet lets people walk all over her, such as her mother and sister, but then overreacts with anger towards others who are trying to help her, such as Cooper. She's rather immature to be a mother with horrible boundaries. She gets upset with her kids, but then immediately caves to whatever they want. It gets stupid and redundant.

Violet didn't like that her daughter was trying to set her up with men, but then she does the same to her Aunt Zoe by inviting Reed over for dinners totally ignoring the pain that Reed caused Zoe. I say ignores because Violet is aware of how Reed hurt her aunt. This is another aspect that doesn't seem to move the story along.

I know some people like the sex scenes, but they don't seem to be much more than filler. As for the flirty banter, it doesn't seem to do much for the story, either. It doesn't even cement their relationship or show that their relationship is growing, just flirty filler. There's also a lot of sexual innuendos that detracts from the story instead of adding to it. Yes, Harvey is a dirty old man, but the innuendos are starting to spread to more than just Harvey.

All of the filler type writing slows the story down. The fillers do not add to the suspense or move the story forward. The fillers slow down the story and detracts from the enjoyment. It's during the fillers that I tend to remember something I need to do or some chore I want to get done and I have no problem turning off this audiobook series. That doesn't happen with the other audiobooks that do not have the fillers.

I listened to this series because the first book got me hooked on the other characters in the story. I was also intrigued by the paranormal aspect. I wasn't as impressed with Violet, but I had hoped she would grow as a character through the books. Sadly, it doesn't seem as though she has done so. Now, after the 12th book, there are too many unsolved story lines and the author continues to add new ones, such as the paranormal aspects of Addy and Lane. Disappointing.

The story is great, and the murder is interesting. What I found annoying was that in each book, Tom Reed is threatened by a supervisor of getting fired. Once or twice can make sense, but five times is too much. The repetition is more annoying than interesting, and it detracts from the story.

It bothers me that the narrators don't confirm how to say the names. It's obvious they haven't listened to previous books or they would know how to pronounce the names or other words in the Dragonlance world. It's a bit slow. Tasselhoff, Caramon, and Tika didn't show up until book 3. A little bit of a bummer, but I'm glad they showed up.
