Jumping story
Revisado: 04-19-25
The author does a lovely job of writing, but it’s frustrating to have the story jump without warning from decade to decade and sibling to sibling.

Annoying music

A well written story does not need that annoying background, music, and the sound effects.

Historia
To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape - a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour.

I give it the highest ratings but a story about a woman who follows the course she does is disheartening.

No one in her exclusive neighborhood in Goldenhills, Massachusetts, knows what living with the demanding Tanner is really like. They know even less about the life she left behind in Florida almost two decades ago.

I just tried this author who is new to me as a flyer. What a delightful surprise. The story is complex. It reminds us of how strong we women can be through painful life experiences.

Cece is in love. She has arrived early at her in-laws’ beautiful lake house in Salish, Montana, to finish planning her wedding to Charlie, a medical student with a brilliant future. Charlie asks Garrett, his best friend from college, to officiate, though Cece can’t imagine anyone less appropriate for the task; Garrett doesn’t believe in love, much less marriage. But as she spends time with Garrett, and his gruff mask slips, her long-held expectations for her life with Charlie begin to crumble, her feelings for Garrett—haunted by a tragic event from his past—become impossible to bury.

A Big Undertaking
Revisado: 02-27-25
The complexity of the story evolves with several characters and their intertwined lives over decades. We hear of their frolics and follies, often from dream states. The approach requires deep concentration to follow as the author scatters so many seeds of emotion that it feels one has read several novels.

The story has complex human interactions with in depth character development. Its historical setting adds to my awareness of the role of behind the scenes “fighting” in a war.

Good character development
Revisado: 11-18-24
I thought this was more mature and culturally complex than other books by this author, even though I’ve enjoyed some of those. My only dislike is that I don’t understand the meaning of the title. I do wish that had been explained better in the book.

It began in Ethiopia, hundreds of thousands of years ago, when a handful of genetic mutations caused evolution to split from the primates and mankind was born. Now, eons later, evidence of more splits from the apes is being unearthed. And with them, a disturbing realization. Ours was only one of many.
