Loving his brother’s widow is so creepy. It almost ruins a very good book.
Revisado: 04-11-25
I love the Arliss Cutter character. I love the stories but every time he starts yearning for his dead brother’s wife I just move ahead. It’s creepy and gross and real people. Don’t do that I hope. I’m really far into the series now and I’ve invested a lot of time, but that part of the story just kind of ruins it.

Not at all believable
Revisado: 03-07-25
The main character is childish and impulsive, which are not likable traits. Impossible to suspend belief and think that a person could move into a very small town and blatantly investigate a crime and think that those in charge would not become suspicious. With that being the main part of the story, it just ruined it for me.

Incredible Prequel
Revisado: 08-06-22
Man, I love the ATLA universe. I devoured this book and plan to start the next one as soon as I finish this review. From Nancy Wu’s narration to Yee’s carefully woven glimpse into the darker, more raw and human parts of the world I came to love as a child… This story satisfied a different place in my heart than Aang’s or Korra’s did (not better or worse, just different— darker, maybe). As a huge fan of the entire franchise I continue to be impressed at the themes explored and depth of character given to each Avatar and their teams. Even the villains in this book are written with interesting, unpredictable dimensions and doses of humanity. Word to the wise— This book is probably intended more for the adults who grew up with the original ATLA (or are just now exploring it) than for the children watching it in 2022. There is significantly more violence and deeper exploration of the moral grey area which comes with being the Avatar. Maybe PG-12 or 13 by my standards. I was also a huge fan of the bisexual/pansexual representation in this book and the fact that a character’s sexuality isn’t considered “the point” of the story, just a casual part of it like any other romance subplot in a hero’s journey. Give me more strong, dimensional female action heroes with nuanced experiences and relationships. Loved it.

This story has not aged well
Revisado: 06-21-22
I had a very hard time finishing this book. The premise is good and if it was the year 2005 I might have enjoyed it more. The chauvinistic references and man versus woman idea is very dated as are the lines of the story of the homosexual women. I even found some of the Race references a little difficult to hear. Honestly I am a conservative southern woman so by definition these things should not have made a difference. They did. I

Historia
Seventeen-year-old Aderyn ("Ryn") only cares about two things: her family and her family's graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don't always stay dead.

Well developed characters and relationships combine with a compelling storyline and talented narrator to form an audiobook I tore through in two days! Such an interesting twist on the classic zombie novel… I was hooked from start to finish.

I wanted to love this book.
Revisado: 04-08-22
Based on my admiration for both of the authors, I thought I would love this book. I did not. The main character was not likable. She did dumb things over and over again. It took far too long for any kind of story related to her mystery to unfold. For most of the book she’s just getting beat up and people seem to act like it’s not really a big deal. Sorry, I really really wanted to love this book. I am so sad that I didn’t.

Historia
It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

The post apocalyptic epic The Stand wishes it was
Revisado: 02-20-22
I loved The Stand, but let's be honest-- Stephen King isn't exactly known for his strong female characters. Year One accomplishes much of what The Stand did (believable pandemic ends the world, relatable characters band together to survive and adapt, etc) with the added bonuses of magic as well as female characters with complex, dynamic personalities... without needing to go on about everything for quite as long.
I particularly enjoyed Roberts' way of seamlessly blending fae and other magical creatures into a story which is otherwise very raw and focused on human nature. It's nice to have that sprinkling of lore to satisfy my fantasy craving and separate this story from other apocalypse tales... without feeling like I'm reading Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
I enjoyed Whelan's performance. I found the male voices slightly jarring for the first few minutes but quickly warmed up to them. Each character had a distinct way of speaking-- different enough to be discernable but never distracting. My favorite voice she did was Fred's... but maybe that's because Fred is one of my absolute favorite characters.
This story kept me on my toes-- at times it had me chuckling to myself and at others it had me crying. I fell in love with all of the characters. Each had their own soft spot, sense of humor, flaws and strengths. I think part of what makes this book special is that despite crafting an extremely dark, scary, ugly future fooled with danger, gore and violence, Roberts also created a cast of characters filled to bursting with fierce determination, loyalty, grace, empathy, light and love. They were a pleasure to read and I'm certainly looking forward to the rest of this series in hopes of a chance to get to know its vividly written cast even better.

Great story. Narrator over enunciates to the point of distraction.
Revisado: 01-22-22
As a North Carolina native and a graduate of Appalachian State University, I love to read stories about our mountains. I also love stories that reveal the on going struggles of the people of Appalachia. This is a terrific story and I enjoyed it very much.
I was very distracted By the narrator’s enunciation. She over pronounced practically every word to the point that you could not focus on what she was saying. It just didn’t fit the overall voice of the story.
