Historia
Social media influencer and podcast host April Ajoy wouldn’t have called herself a Christian Nationalist when she performed her original song “America Say Jesus” on the Jim Bakker show, or when she participated in Jesus Marches across America, or when she posted cringe-worthy videos on YouTube to campaign for Mitt Romney. April just considered herself a good Christian: faithful, Republican, and determined to make America a Christian nation once again.

This book was "a joy" to listen to!
Revisado: 10-08-24
Been a big fan of Aprill Ajoy for a while now. She has a unique way of dismantling Christian Nationalism, fundamentalism, the patriarchy, and bigotry with wit and charm and this book is just a deeper plunge into all of that. Humor can be quite disarming sometimes and I sincerely hope that her book will reach people who would not normally listen to other voices in the larger deconstruction/exvangelical movement.

Historia
With the rise of Trumpism, the American evangelical movement has more political influence than ever—yet at the same time, people are leaving Christianity in record numbers. Why are so many people walking away from the right-wing religion they were raised in, and what are they doing to overcome the past? Writer and podcaster Blake Chastain is uniquely positioned to understand this phenomenon. Raised evangelical, he went to a Christian college intending to become a pastor—until he found himself unable to reconcile his faith with the prejudice and even abuse he saw being done in God’s name.

Wondering why people are deconstructing? Read this
Revisado: 10-04-24
"Exvangelical" has been one of my favorite podcasts for years and this book is such a natural extension of Blake's work. It's great. He does such a fantastic job of breaking down the journey, background, and potential future so many exvangelicals have had. The book shines brightest in his commentary of present day evangelicalism and how it has distorted into a Trumpian monstrosity and why so many of us decided to leave. Not because we no longer believed, but because still WANTED to believe but saw nothing recognizable it what the evangelical church was quickly becoming. It is worth a listen. Especially for anyone out there who still identifies as evangelical and is trying to understand why your friends are "deconstructing" this book is WELL worth your time.

Great book especially for Silicon Valley locals!
Revisado: 02-01-24
I am fairly new to the mystery genre but I really enjoyed this book! Numerous diverse characters of all ages and their own flaws flesh out this story with lots of interesting turns. As a native of the Bay Area, this book was especially enjoyable because there are so many references to familiar places and landmarks in the Silicon Valley area! San Jose feels like a character of its own in this book! Recommended!

R. Scott Okamoto had no idea that his job as an English teacher at an evangelical Christian college meant facing bigotry as an Asian American and faux intellectualism as a teacher—and what it would mean for his own journey.

One of the BEST books on religious deconstruction!
Revisado: 06-05-23
I related to this book on SO many levels: as an Asian American, as a former evangelical active in my college days with InterVarsity, as someone who has thoroughly - but is still actively - deconstructing his faith, and as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community. Okamoto nails all of it so well.
With humor and keen analysis, Okamoto's experiences at "EVU" shine a damning light on the myriad ways in which American Evangelical Christianity is structured as a straight, white, cis, middle-class, capitalist, conservative institution at the expense of all other groups that dare to challenge that culture and hierarchy. It is shocking yet not at all surprising to hear about how much outright hypocrisy and bigotry he faced at EVU as liberal, Asian-American professor from both the faculty and students. Okamoto is an unsung hero for challenging the racist and homophobic status quo in evangelicalism.
This book is revealing, hilarious, and infuriating all at the same time. It is a must read for anyone who is deconstructing their faith or seeking to understand those who are deconstructing.

Historia
Consciousness, a unique and perplexing mental state, has been the subject of debate for philosophers and scientists for millennia. And while it is widely agreed within contemporary philosophy that consciousness is a problem whose solutions are likely to determine the fate of any number of other problems, there is no settled position on the ultimate nature of consciousness. This series of 12 penetrating and thought-provoking lectures by an acclaimed teacher and scholar approaches its subject directly and unflinchingly.

Falsely advertised as psychology
Revisado: 10-28-20
This course is categorized under psychology when it really should be under philosophy. Most of these heavily philosophical lectures are irrelevent or incomplete from a psychological POV on the issue of consciousness.
