The author begins with the outward aspects of the teaching most likely to puzzle the student coming fresh to the subject. He considers various attitudes to Sufi ideas and evidence of their absorption into medieval Christianity, Hinduism, Jewish mysticism, and modern philosophical teachings.

This is not my first Sufi book. But it is the first I truly did not like. This to me was exactly the kind of book that can turn someone off to a teaching. It was mainly talk of things rather than Spirit and Love just a lot of historical data. Best way to sum it up. I think it may have been hard to get through also because the narrator did not invoke the Love of God the way I have felt when the Author narrates themselves, no connection to what he was saying was evident.
