There must be Cliff Notes out there. "How to write a novel, with minimal time, etc." This book seems to follow a pattern. Girl returns home after crummy divorce and inherting her aunt's house and picks up where she left off with her BFF, and other pals! Its just never that siimple. Complete with a TIP" here. and there on how to book chicken and dumplins or grilled cheese. Really? And who uses the word "TWEE" in a conversation with a friend.

I was unable to get past the repeated and casual use of the "N word." I found the acknowledgements alone to be offensive.

Possibly the worst book Child has ever written

A female FBI agent in a long-term relationship with a drug-dealing alcoholic philanderer is the first leap. She is sent to southern Louisiana to solve a murder. As she is leaving the New Orleans airport she heads into the bayou, where she encounters rolling hills. I lived in southern LA for many moons. It is possibly the flattest land I have ever seen. The author continues to describe a landscape that does not describe ANY part of the bayou I have ever been to. She nearly gets herself attacked by an alligator when she runs off the road in the bayou. The story goes downhill from here, no really, I am not exaggerating. I have read almost everything written by PW Child and Child/Lincoln. This book was a disappointment for me. I was looking forward to the series, murder mysteries in the bayou, what could be better two things I enjoy together, what a treat.

The editing is HORRIBLE. It sounds like the audiobook was made on the cheap and not edited at all.

The narrator sounds like what we, in the South, call a 'Bubba' who can barely read, has marbles in his mouth, and certainly did not read the book prior to his pitiful attempt at narration.

Don't waste your time or money on this audiobook.

This book should get negative stars.

I am very disappointed with this book, Seems like Cornwell is writing her own strange musings. I listened for 6 hours thinking it would get interesting. I have always enjoyed Cornwell's coroner stories. This book is not typical of Cornwell's novels. In 6 hours it is essentially the ramblings of very neurotic woman. If you are expecting Cornwell's usual fast moving mystery/thrillers this book will not meet your expectations. I returned it after 6 hours.

This book is part of a series that is one of my favorites. The authors put in mystery, thriller, paranormal, and sometimes a little romance, they mix it well and serve it up like a fine meal. There are numerous twists and turns and don't bother trying to determine "who dun it" you'll be wasting your time.

ENJOY!

When the book started, I thought I had gotten a hold of a collection of oddly related short stories. I'm not a big fan of short stories or essays. Just about the time I about to give up on it, it became a thriller! I have always been a fan of Nosferatu (if you've never seen or heard of Nosferatu, check it out) and was immediately drawn to the title. I knew or at least hoped I was in for some Stephen Kingesque, gut level apprehension - dare I say fear?

The book is excellent, fast paced for nearly 20 hours, well written, with characters that you (mostly) want to know personally. I am a tiny bit sorry that I neglected a few things (and people) due to my deep engrossment in NOS4AT2.

Read & enjoy!

What disappointed you about On What Grounds?

Tangential references to everything the author knows anything about. High on trivial references, from Dylan Thomas to Strauss; fine dining to Abraham Lincoln.

No clear heroine, not much mystery, lots of self aggrandizement, lots of details about minor details. Is the author trying to lead the reader astray or does she really think she is telling a wonderful story? I am 2/3rds through and there seems to be no direction, few suspects.

Arrogant and complaisant.

Boring.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Unclear

What three words best describe Rebecca Gibel’s performance?

Young, Happy, Midwestern

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Frustration, Anticlimactic

Any additional comments?

Wasted time waiting for it to get better.

I enjoyed the book. I like slasher fiction and nonfiction. I like fantasy and a bit of sci-fi. In my opinion this book takes slasher fiction adds fantasy/ sci-fi and multiples it to the 10th power!

Think of Men In Black meets al qaeda.

It is raw and edgy.

I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart

Weak Pathetic Victim – Dramatic Monologue?

The ‘heroine’ who is telling the story is fey. She has friends who are witches, vampires, and other such creatures. She is weak, bruises easily, and is constantly worrying about what her friends think about her and whether or not they are really friends.
I know people like this (not fey) but whiny, weak, pitiful, woebegone, sad sacks. I don’t like being around them.

Halfway through this book (after thinking it would surely improve) I threw in the towel . No sense making myself uncomfortable for pleasure!

There is little action and seemingly no plot.

I was disappointed because I am familiar with this author and have enjoyed some of her other work. That is the reason I bought the book.

Amazing American Patriot Story-Told Redundantly

Having had a Dad who was in one of the U.S. Navy's Special Forces, I have great respect for this man and the family that made him who he was. I am heart wrenched at the family's and friend's loss. This Navy SEAL is a true hero and American Patriot in every sense of the word.

The story is told by a writer that I think doesn't do the story of this SEAL or his family justice. The real story itself is bone chillingly frightening, and hold -your -breath suspenseful. The author tells the story in a redundant, wandering manner that was difficult for me to listen to with out the use of fast forward.

I don't know if the Murphy family approved the writing of this account. There isn't much first person information. Most of it seems to be gleaned from newspaper reports and interviews that the author read about.

I am truly sorry that Michael P. Murphy's story was not told by a better writer.
