Historia
A sickness has claimed the kingdoms of men. Everyone is either sick or dying, weak to a curse that has no cure—except for me. I’m immune to this mysterious illness, and I do my best to heal the sick and ease the pain of the dying. I was supposed to marry the Prince of Raventower, but after his father and elder brother succumbed to the sickness, he’s now king—and can only marry someone of his station.

SPOILER FREE: I was really confused by the use of language in this book. In the beginning, the FMC has a conversation that has a very 18-19th century prose to it, but then a few chapters later they're using current slang for things? There were also a few misuses of words, like the author tried to use a bigger word but didn't really know what it meant (or maybe used the wrong word?). This is definitely a sub/dom-'pleasure in the pain' type of dynamic and not really written in a way where you can overcome any discomfort if it's triggering to you at all. During a lot of the 🌶️ scenes, I kept wondering "was this written by a man or a woman"?? Not that women can't have these sorts of thoughts during 🌶️ time, but this was written in a way that I don't think any of us can really relate to (very p*rn inspired). If I had a penny for every time they said big d*ck in this book....
As for the plot.. it's all very clear which way things are going to go and you as the reader are clued into everything before the characters are, so you're sort of just waiting for the characters to catch up to you. Which personally, is not my cup of tea in this genre. The FMC also describes seeing certain things throughout the book and at first, I thought what she was seeing was actually going on, but you figure out about 30% through the book that it's actually just in her head. This did not come off to me as a literary tactic, more just that the author didn't explain a very basic concept of the magic in the world before just writing out the scenes. Part of why I feel this way is because there are other disjointed scenes throughout the book that make you wonder "were there just pages skipped or was that just a really abrupt cut scene?" The magic system and world building are very subpar and there's still a lot about those two things that are left unexplained, while we got an almost obnoxious amount of 🌶️ scenes instead. The best part of the book for me was honestly Fang. He's a true homie and his relationship with the FMC is the only thing that kept me reading.

TRIGGER WARNINGS
Revisado: 07-19-23
These trigger warnings are also potentially spoilers, but they are pretty big ones, so I suggest you read. TRIGGER WARNINGS: SA, repeated SA, that repeated gRape resulting in pregnancy, physical and mental ab*se. Those are the big ones that I wish I would've known about prior to reading this book.
Spoiler free review: Not a terrible story, just all very predictable. The characters have some depth, but there's just so many of them from the jump that you never really feel super connected to any of them. It's written in the same weird blend of 1st person and 3rd person POV (like crescent city series), but I think this narrator struggled with giving everyone their own voice. Which is why I gave her 4 stars.
Spoiler review: Everything I said in the spoiler free + some more details about the triggers. About halfway through the book the FMC begins getting gRaped on a nightly basis for months. It continues to be a theme until about the last 5 chapters of the book. It was honestly really hard to get though since it was either mentioned or described every time you were in her POV during those chapters. Once our FMC was saved by her mates, it seemed like it took no time at all for her to jump back into bed with them. This seemed very callous and untrue to how someone who endured that length and severity of SA would react/process that level of tra*ma. The final spicy scenes honestly made my skin crawl because I just mentally was not ready for the FMC to get back into anything spicy related. I think the only themes I really enjoyed from this book were the throuple aspect, found family, and the relationship she has with her brother.

Historia
After spending years training to defend my people from our enemies, I never expected that my enemy would be the one keeping me alive. Athos is the last human city. A treaty with the Fae keeps the fae, the vampires, and the wolf shifters at bay, while we fight against the dragons at our border. Being a human in this world is dangerous, and we all make sacrifices to survive.

So the narrator was definitely the wrong choice for this story. She gave the FMC a pretentious voice that didn't seem to fit how the story was written. It ended up being very annoying and ruining a lot of the character dialogue for me. She would also do some random accents for parts of characters speaking, but not the whole sentence? and not everytime that character would speak? It was odd and threw me off.
Spoiler free review: So the premise of the story isn't bad and the mystery of a few things is what kept me going to the end. I'm an avid "romantacy" reader so I do give props for keeping me guessing on a few things. Beyond that, I found the book very difficult to get through. The pacing is very odd, sometimes we're skipping through things very quickly and then the next, we're stuck in a scene for entirely too long. The character development was basically non existent. The world building was sub-par. The prose is SO cringey, things like "I've *seen* your darkness", "Naughty girl", and other cheap lines with no other context that feel detached and not very believable. Overall, just not great writing. Pair that with the weird narration and it was a mess.
Spoiler review: Girl meets supposed enemy. Girl feels "weird and inevitable" connection to him. Supposed enemy continuously saves FMC "for no reason". FMC flip flops like an idiot and never seems to learn from an enormous amount of clear signs that supposed enemy is actually the good guy. FMC gets betrayed by allies and STILL won't come to terms with MMC actually being the good guy. Everything falls apart and even after having her whole fake life fall apart around her, she STILL won't come to terms with the reality of her situation. Mix in some poorly written s*x scenes and a single well written banter line. This story had a lot of potential and could have gone in so many cool or interesting directions, but it all stayed exactly how you would think it would play out. By the end, I was completely fed up with the FMC and there wasn't enough character building for me to believe or understand why she would want to continue to "sacrifice" for her sisters. Overall, the MMC, FMC, and plot had a lot of potential that went nowhere.
