Bizarre story. Recommended.

If you could sum up Informally Educated in three words, what would they be?
This book is so bizarre I found myself questioning the truth of it, however that is probably my own naivety. It is a very disturbing book and it actually made me physically uneasy, it is frightening to think that there are people like Cooper out there in the world. Guess I can't count to 3.

Way too nice.
Revisado: 08-28-13
What disappointed you about I'm Your Man?
I do not know Leonard Cohen. However, I felt that this book was written by someone who knew him personally and was a friend or someone who really favors him. In other words, this book paints a very rosy portrait of a person. I realize I am at a disadvantage because I do not personally know Mr. Cohen, but I am not naïve and just had a very strong gut feeling that this book was very, very nice to him. I would not waste my time again and actually returned this book. However, I suppose in a very general biographical way you can get a sense of what Cohen did and where he moved and why he wrote or performed in this way or that way.

Historia
Lit follows Mary Karr's descent into the inferno of alcoholism and madness - and her astonishing resurrection. Karr's longing for a solid family seems secure when her marriage to a handsome, Shakespeare-quoting poet produces a son they adore. But she can't outrun her apocalyptic past. She drinks herself into the same numbness that nearly devoured her charismatic but troubled mother, reaching the brink of suicide. A hair-raising stint in "The Mental Marriott" awakens her to the possibility of joy, and leads her to an unlikely faith.

Finally! One for the "Win" column

I thought it was kinda whiny and fake.
Revisado: 04-28-12
Would you try another book from Mary Karr and/or Mary Karr?
No, I don't think I'll try another book by Mary Karr. I mistakenly thought this was the memoir of an average Jane who overcame struggles with alcoholism, but she is a professional memoirist and a college prof to boot. If you take away all the literary fluff the book would be about 6 or 7 hours long. I actually wish I could personally call her and ask for my money back and tell her I think she is a big fake. Due to the fact that she is a professional I kept wondering if she was just hyping up her alcoholism and after about 3 minutes of her admittance into the mental hospital she is complaining about being there like some angsty kid.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Her narration was flat and unenethusastic, I thought it was whiny because she doesn't sound thankful at all for her success.

Historia
Over the course of this gripping narrative, Dave Cullen approaches his subjects with unrivaled care and insight. What emerges are shattering portraits of the killers, the victims, and the community that suffered one of the greatest - and most socially and historically important - shooting tragedies of the 20th century.

Great narration, skipping around=breathing room.

Any additional comments?
I think the narrator does a great job with this book. At first I was a little annoyed about the skipping around from points of view and chronologically a bit too. However, I found this to be a virtue because it does not overwhelm with the grisly and psychologically intense parts (graphic descriptions of the crime and glimpses into the mindset of the killers).I did some research into some of the lower star reviews on Amazon ( I don't see many low reviews on this site for many books ) and most of these were complaining about the lack of focus on the bullying or teasing of the boys that did this. I find that complaint legitemate in the sense that he does not focus on this. However, I think it was good to not focus on this in one sense because it should be stated that many people are teased and bullied in high school, but a very small percentage act out super violently so there is a lack of correlation with teasing and bullying, though it is hard to negate it as a factor which the author I feel does. So I have mixed feelings about that aspect of the book. That is my reasoning for the 3 star on the story part. I will be listening to this again though, made my boring job driving fly by.
