Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Totally overrated
Revisado: 12-19-23
I'm not sure why this is the go-to book for traumatology. It's poorly written (the narrator is also unnecessarily dramatic, especially when describing sex violence, Gorey accidents, or the shortcomings of CBT and the DSM) with no cohesive theme. It seems the theme should be "the body keeps the score" but this misleading phrase (sometimes literal, but mostly figurative) is relevant to only a couple of chapters.
The chapters are all over the place, giving contradictory and at times erroneous information, in an attempt to provide a textbook-like comprehensive overview. Instead, it reads like name-dropping, anecdotes, self-experiments, mostly self-administered experiments, and pop psychology.
What is van der Kolk's actual area of expertise? One does not know from reading this book. It is also unclear what he is proposing: in one chapter, he denigrates the "talking cure," but then promotes three therapies in which talking is the main function in healing.
There are a few inspirational statements and a few experiments worth knowing about, but I'm sure there are better sources, including Judith Herman's Trauma and Recovery, which came out two years before van der Kolk's The Body Keeps the Score.
This book is a skip, especially because of the gratuitous descriptions of traumatic events.

Suspenseful
Revisado: 06-23-23
I love hearing the author narrate, though it must have been rough.
This was a hard read, too. The second half of the book contains a lot of childhood sexual abuse.
However, it is masterful storytelling while being authentic. The story culminates in a choice between two evils. With a lot of pluck and luck the author finds it doesn't need to be either.

Historia
In Traumatic Narcissism, Daniel Shaw presents a way of understanding the traumatic impact of narcissism as it is engendered developmentally and as it is enacted relationally. Focusing on the dynamics of narcissism in interpersonal relations, Shaw describes the relational system of what he terms the "traumatizing narcissist" as a system of subjugation - the objectification of one person in a relationship as the means of enforcing the dominance of the subjectivity of the other.

Amazing Resource for Narcissism!
Revisado: 06-09-23
Oh, wow, where to begin! There is nothing I don't love about this book (except the price to get a print version and the voice of the audiobook narrator).
1. This is a book for people interested in the details of the mental health field and although I don't know what I don't know, it seems like this covered everything about narcissism concisely.
The details should be publicized widely: everyone has a little bit of narcissism (some too little), and those with extreme narcissism can be shown compassion and love by therapists who want to and can help!
I absolutely loved the literary references and the clinical examples were touching.
This sounds really weird for a technical manual on narcissism but this is one of my favorite books. It's intellectual but so human at the same time.
It really spoke to my soul, satisfied my curiosity, and tickled my brain.

Historia
In the 1980s, Erika Bornman’s family join, and ultimately move to, KwaSizabantu, a Christian mission based in KwaZulu-Natal, which is touted as a nirvana, founded on egalitarian values. But something sinister lurks beneath ‘the place where people are helped’. Life at KwaSizabantu is hard. Christianity is used to justify harsh punishments, and congregants are forced to repent for their sins. Threats of physical violence ensure adherence to stringent rules. Parents are pitted against children. Friendships are discouraged.

A tale of two missions
Revisado: 04-24-23
I loved the narrator. she really captured the personality of the author. There's a lot of documentation but the author's sense of humor keeps it readable. The author also talks about hard things, but shares all the good things that has happened to her as well. It's her life's mission against the mission of malice.

Behind the tall, foreboding gates of a commune in Brazil, Daniella Mestyanek Young was raised in the religious cult The Children of God, also known as The Family, as the daughter of high-ranking members. Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

Strangely Comforting
Revisado: 01-22-23
I am so glad the author read the audiobook version! This is a hard subject, but hearing Daniella tell her own story felt comforting. She's telling you her story-in a way, your story-in a way that IS candid yet inspiring.
I didn't want to stop listening. It is a treasure! And a great start to reading cult survivor memoirs.

What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
