Historia
With poignant insight and humor, Frank Vertosick, Jr., MD, describes some of the greatest challenges of his career, including a six-week-old infant with a tumor in her brain, a young man struck down in his prime by paraplegia, and a minister with a .22-caliber bullet lodged in his skull. Told through intimate portraits of Vertosick's patients and unsparing-yet-fascinatingly detailed descriptions of surgical procedures, When the Air Hits Your Brain illuminates both the mysteries of the mind and the realities of the operating room.

The grim and terrifying reality of medical procedures gone wrong
Revisado: 01-31-24
This book is horribly, depressing, extremely distressing, and makes one fearful of medical procedures. We all know that the reality of losing people on the table, things going catastrophically wrong… Is always present. I cried throughout much of this book.

Historia
War and Peace is at once an epic war chronicle and an exploration of everything that make us all human: love and hate, ambition and despair, life and death. Allow yourself to get lost in the lives of three Russian aristocratic families, whose triumphs and challenges are every bit as resonant to today’s listener as they were to original readers. Thandiwe Newton inhabits each character with such flair that it is easy to forget that you are listening to one voice.

Grating
Revisado: 12-03-21
Often there is a reason why things are free! I traded this in for a recording that deserves using a credit. The voice of the narrator brought me close to nervous break down. I only listened to three hours. Way over acted! I worked in a dinner theater, and this is the voice that we would use for some deranged pirate jokester, not a literary classic.

Label the chapters!!
Revisado: 08-11-21
It’s beyond me why there aren’t titles for each chapter. You can never go back and listen to the ones you want or select individual chapters. Drives me batty. But entertaining for a long drive, for sure.

Historia
On a road trip through Africa, two English people - Bobby, a civil servant with a guilty appetite for African boys; and Linda, a supercilious "compound wife" - are driving back to their enclave after a stay in the capital. But in between lies the landscape of an unnamed country whose squalor and ethnic bloodletting suggest Idi Amin's Uganda. And the farther Naipaul's protagonists travel into it, the more they find themselves crossing the line that separates privileged outsiders from horrified victims.

Gripping poignancy
Revisado: 06-23-21
This is a series of heartbreaking, intimately rendered separate short stories, dealing with the savagery with which the human species can treat one another. This brilliant author has created such vivid characters, that I feel as if I have just had dinner with each of them. It is the thought-provokingly timeless story of the oppressed, the unsung immigrant, the need to be seen and appreciated as a valuable citizen in this shared world. The narrator is simply magnificent.

Historia
Indoors are servants, meals, and furniture. There, too, is The Man of Wrath, her upright Teutonic husband, inspiring in Elizabeth a mixture of irritation, affection, and irreverence. But outside she can escape domestic routine, read favorite books, play with her three babies and garden to her heart's content. Through Elizabeth's eyes we watch the seasons, from May's "oasis of bird-cherries and greenery" to the time when "snow carpets her Pomeranian wilderness".

Very funny!
Revisado: 03-20-21
This book was surprisingly hilarious in its subtle cattiness between the houseguests. The descriptions of the garden are great if you love gardening, as I certainly do! I was so pleasantly surprised that I hated that it wasn’t longer!

A shockingly witty modest proposal
Revisado: 01-20-21
I’m not sure what the audio problem was in one review, but it sounded normal to me. Who knew that Swift was such an hysterically witty satirist? I mean, obviously many people know this...and now so do I!

Stop fake accent abuse!!
Revisado: 01-15-21
The actual book is great but I can’t and won’t suffer through fake accents. Why even would a person be speaking with an accent at all? It is understood that they are in France. The narrator is American. We are perfectly capable of making the mental leap without the phony baloney nonsense. It also drones....

Historia
One of the world’s greatest novelists, Leo Tolstoy was also the author of a number of superb short stories, one of his best known being “The Kreutzer Sonata.” This macabre story involves the murder of a wife by her husband. It is a penetrating study of jealousy as well as a piercing complaint about the way in which society educates men and women in matters of sex - a serious condemnation of the mores and attitudes of the wealthy, educated class.
