Grating narration…obnoxious protagonist
Revisado: 03-13-25
Snark, when it’s done well, is fun. Molly Harper does a great job with snark. Her characters are likable…this character, not so much. I didn’t like her and didn’t care what happened to her. She’s just too obnoxious.
The story, other than the mostly failed snark, was actually pretty good, but is completely ruined by the narrator. I was determined to finish the book but it wasn’t easy. I was cringing from the terrible interpretation of men’s voices but by the end, I just wanted it over with. Some of the voices just hurt my ears.

Narrator cannot imitate females
Revisado: 01-22-25
Might want to read this rather than listen. The narrator’s “female” voices are beyond cringey and well into grating.

Perhaps it was just too “out there” for me
Revisado: 08-18-24
This is the first of Richards’ books that I’ve not been captivated by. One of the things that makes his stories so compelling is that there’s a believability and relatability with concepts and characters, even as they push the boundaries; for me, the section after the story ends is necessary to separate fact from fiction. I feel like I’ve ‘lived’ his other stories as they’ve been told—felt the excitement, the wonderment, the fear. This time…not so much. Found myself not really paying as close attention as I normally do. Can’t explain further without risking saying too much that could spoil others’ enjoyment.

Historia
In the slums of 18th-century France, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift - an absolute sense of smell. As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects. Then one day, he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume" - the scent of a beautiful young virgin.

Not sure why I kept listening
Revisado: 08-16-24
I enjoyed the descriptions about the making of perfume and the fact that I kept listening is the only way I can justify two stars for the story. Otherwise, it was not an enjoyable experience. I didn’t know I’d be listening to a book about a serial killer. My fault for not finding out more about it before purchasing and listening. For me, there was nothing redeeming, inspiring, or even thought-provoking. I prefer stories that I can connect with…characters that evoke more than disgust.

This story and its narration is art. It was perfect. Poignant. Heartfelt. Bleak. Suspenseful. Hopeful. Humanity at its worst and its best. Just listen.

Historia
After selling his major's commission in the Dragoons, Lord Roman Sullivan wants nothing more than a calm, sedate life in the country where he's agreed to act as steward over his father's estate. Society is no place for a man who can't sleep without fear of attacking an innocent in the night, after all. But upon his arrival, madness lands in his path in the form of a secret-keeping pixie of a lady, a precocious boy, a lady in the throes of dementia, and a band of rabidly loyal servants, who combine to capture both his attention and what's left of his heart in one fell swoop.

Listen to sample first
Revisado: 08-09-23
I could not get through this one. The story might be fine but the narrator grated on me. I don’t really know why…maybe it was the ultra deliberate pronounciation of each word? I sped it up hoping that would help to no avail. I rarely listen to the samples but I can’t help but think if I’d done so this time I would have known. Oh well.

Narration ruined it for me
Revisado: 12-13-21
I can’t tell how much I might enjoy the story because of the narration. She YELLS dialog. It’s loud, shrill, and grating to my ears—even when I have the sound low. You may feel differently.
