Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

A different narrator
Revisado: 11-18-24
At first, I was disappointed there was a new narrator. His voice is wonderful, but there were no distinctive character voices except some growling at the start of Gamache’s sentences. I still don’t quite understand that peculiar distinction.
It seemed to lessen as the book advanced. I became more accommodating with the narration, and I was became more thoroughly entranced with the storyline.
Overall, I gave 4 stars for performance.
Both previous narrators have been so amazingly excellent, perhaps I should be forgiving with the new voice.

Divorce, anger, domestic abuse…
Revisado: 07-22-24
I love this author, but the amount of arguing, crying, accusing, long diatribes of fights made this book my least favorite of hers. It was depressing and stressful despite the good writing.

Kaylee Sloan’s home in Southern California is full of wonderful memories of the woman who raised her. But the memories are prolonging her grief over her mother’s recent death. A successful author, Kaylee hoped she could pour herself into her work. Instead she has terrible writer’s block and a looming deadline.

Delightful story but I’m sad the series is finished. For now, at least. I hope we get more books in this series.
I really preferred the longer lengths and not so short and abrupt ending, but loved it nonetheless.

Love the series
Revisado: 12-27-23
I so enjoy the writing, depth of character development, plot lines, and scope of all of the novels. But… seems the endings have become abrupt and chopped off. A mere few lines of epilogue instead of allowing us to savor the resolution and the pleasure of a happy ending. I wish we were still getting a longer and more complete and satisfying conclusion.

I especially like the longer length. It provides a rich opportunity to really drop into the well-developed characters and stories.
