Historia
With more than half a million copies sold, Robert Mason's Chickenhawk is one of the best-selling books ever written about the Vietnam War. Fascinated with flying from a young age, Mason earned his private pilot's license even before graduating high school. He enlisted in the army in 1964 and endured an extremely challenging "weeding out" process in an effort to fly helicopters. Sent to Vietnam, he survived more than 1,000 air combat missions despite the violence and brutality exploding all around him.

Tons of insight into Huey helicopter operations in Vietnam
Revisado: 01-10-23
I chose this book because I worked as a flight medic in the Army back in the early and mid 1990’s, on Huey helicopters. Many of my pilots were Vietnam Veterans and I swear, they flew just like described. Knapp of the earth flying down riverbeds, under bridges and wires, dropping into LZ’s that appeared WAY too small when I was standing on the skids spotting them, all those sudden autorotations (not to the ground by then), instrument flights, and even the hoist operations (although we focused on people, not cargo) were all incredibly precise descriptions. This book brought me both very fond memories of my favorite job ever and a much more clear and tragic view of the experiences those amazing pilots endured but would never speak about. I’m extremely grateful I was able to enjoy a bit of their talent as an aircrew member and appreciate the insight this book has provided.
Just one question… where is Harrison Ford? Dang, that would have been amazing!

Worked this on an ambulance. I just can’t.
Revisado: 01-04-23
Barely got through 15 minutes before I was bawling, remembering those patients and those days. So, if you don’t know about this period of history, you need to hear about it. I just can’t go through it again.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Pretty sure I’d love to hear Tom Hanks read the dictionary.

The story was good. Touching. Tom’s narration brought it over the top. I need more Hanx in my life, especially through Audible.

Historia
Peaceful suburbia on Poplar Street in Wentworth, Ohio, takes a turn for the ugly when four vans containing armed "regulators" terrorize the street's residents, cold-bloodedly killing anyone foolish enough to step outside their homes. Houses mysteriously transform into log cabins, and the street now ends in what looks like a child's hand-drawn Western landscape. Masterminding this sudden onslaught is the evil creature Tak, who has taken over the body of an autistic eight-year-old boy, Seth Garin.

Very Different from Desperation!
Revisado: 11-24-22
Wasn’t sure what to expect from this companion book to Desperation, but was pleasantly surprised by this tale. Very different but with many of the same characters, although they are somewhat changed and some familiar locations appear as well. Definitely worth the listen!

Historia
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Forrest Gump in Europe! Best listen in a LONG time!
Revisado: 11-15-22
I downloaded this with the Audible Plus subscription, not expecting much, especially from an author I’d never experienced. Wow! One of my very favorite movies is Forrest Gump, just because of the optimism in such dark circumstances. Well, if you like Forrest Gump, you will also enjoy this completely unexpected, fascinating, entertaining and humorous novel. I will not only be singing it’s praises to all my family and friends, but NOT tossing it into the “remove from device” bucket. I’m definitely listening again. Please take the time to check out this book!

Narritation is wonderful
Revisado: 11-07-19
I didn’t really realize how wonderful a job Sean Barrett did on these books until things changed and I got a new narrator with the next book/audiobook. His pace and styling was exceptional, especially as it carried through the series.
Audiobook itself was a thrilling tale. The writing is entertaining, historically plausible (yeah, it IS fiction), well researched and honestly, a good story. Heck, I’ve been listening to about 15 audiobooks in this series... you think Gone With the Wind is a long book? NAH! If, like me, you want an epic series, this one certainly delivers. Wilbur Smith, I personally want to thank you for many, many, many enjoyable hours of your stories and insights into South Africa. I have a completely new view of that region based on these books.

More Caribbean Excitement
Revisado: 05-15-18
Listening to Nick Sullivan bring to life characters I have grown to know over this series and the Jesse McDermott series is a real pleasure. His talent at various dialects is remarkable and his voice is cozy.
The book itself is a fast paced ride through the islands with a touch of local flavor tossed into a stew of tourist mayhem. Top it off with a dash of American Justice and you have an interesting story and enjoyable listen. Looking forward to Wayne’s next novel!
