Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

A story so vivid
Revisado: 03-19-25
The author is an incredibly gifted storyteller, and his beautifully crafted saga is fabulously narrated by an equally gifted raconteur. The story takes you along the journeys of a number of people, with expected circumstances from start to finish. You'll be so engrossed in the narrative that you'll be carried along rather than anticipating what might happen. With some authors, descriptive passages are something to endure (I might be tempted to skim those sections in a printed book), but these are fresh and engaging, no tired words or images. I can't recommend this audio book highly enough.

Historia
Near the end of her life, Mary Mann Hamilton (1866-c.1936) was encouraged to record her experiences as a female pioneer. The result is the only known firsthand account of a remarkable woman thrust into the center of taming the American South - surviving floods, tornadoes, and fires; facing bears, panthers, and snakes; managing a boardinghouse in Arkansas that was home to an eccentric group of settlers; and running a logging camp in Mississippi that blazed a trail for development in the Mississippi Delta.

Captivating!
Revisado: 11-27-22
The fabulous narrator brings this story to life, as if you're right there living alongside Mary Hamilton. I'm sure reading the book would be good, but Barbara Benjamin-Creel turns it into a riveting account of pioneer life. The hardships and friendships are palpable. Each character is infused with personality through Ms. Benjamin-Creel's talented telling of the tale. I dragged out the last hour and a half, not wanting it to end. That's high praise indeed, especially considering this isn't the kind of book I usually choose. I'll definitely be looking for more books narrated by Barbara Benjamin-Creel.
I can't recommend this Audible book highly enough. Gold stars!!!!!!!
