Historia
In Teaching to Transgress, Bell Hooks - writer, teacher, and insurgent black intellectual - writes about a new kind of education, education as the practice of freedom. Teaching students to "transgress" against racial, sexual, and class boundaries in order to achieve the gift of freedom is, for Hooks, the teacher's most important goal. Bell Hooks speakes to the heart of education today: how can we rethink teaching practices in the age of multiculturalism? What do we do about teachers who do not want to teach, and students who do not want to learn? How should we deal with racism and sexism in the classroom? Full of passion and politics, Teaching to Transgress combines a practical knowledge of the classroom with a deeply felt connection to the world of emotions and feelings. This is the rare book about teachers and students that dares to raise questions about eros and rage, grief and reconciliation, and the future of teaching itself.

important but outdated
Revisado: 08-19-23
Ah, the text copyright is 1994. Now I understand why the book seems so outdated (recording copyright is 2017).
This book is mostly about teaching in the college/university setting. So if you're looking for a book to inform teaching practices in grade school, particularly the lower grades, this is not it.
This book is a compilation of essays and it reads as such. By that I mean it is not cohesive. Is does not read like a book about a particular idea, which is what I was hoping for. The essays are interesting, though. Most of them are engaging, but some drag on and on. The most interesting ideas presented in this book, for me, were the ones only tangentially related to teaching. For example, Chapter 7, on race relations between black women and white women and the impact on the feminist movement.

Fox 8 has always been known as the daydreamer in his pack, the one his fellow foxes regarded with a knowing snort and a roll of the eyes. That is, until Fox 8 develops a unique skill: He teaches himself to speak Yuman by hiding in the bushes outside a house and listening to children’s bedtime stories. The power of language fuels his abundant curiosity about people - even after danjer arrives in the form of a new shopping mall that cuts off his food supply, sending Fox 8 on a harrowing quest to help save his pack.

cute, funny, and so so sad
Revisado: 09-27-21
I loved this story at first. It was delightful. Then it got dark but still hopeful. Then...if you're going for something light-hearted, this is not it. If cruelty upsets you, you will likely become extremely upset. But I can't fault the story for being too powerful, so it still gets 5 stars.

Historia
Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place. Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes.

strange and lovely
Revisado: 09-23-21
My partner, who introduced me to Name of the Wind, could not make it through this book. I, on the other hand, thought it was wonderful precious delight. Precious like something tiny and fine cupped in your hands that you hold close to your chest, between adoring glances. If you love the scenes in Name of the Wind featuring Auri, you will probably love this book.

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

highly recommend book and narrator
Revisado: 05-20-20
The narrator is perfect for this book, and for me personally. She speaks softly, yet with annunciation and conviction. The book itself was thought-provoking, sometimes stirring feelings of comfort, sometimes anger (not with the book), though that might not be true for everyone. It can be a bit tiresome to listen to large portions of the book at a time, since it is sometimes repetitive and the words "introvert" and "extrovert" are uttered in almost every sentence. Other than that, I really enjoyed Quiet and highly recommend it to people who wish to improve their understanding of other people, the world, or themselves.
