Selected this for my library only because of Nicola Walker. Good story at the start, didn't expect the twist. Overall, a good story. But I never like when new characters are presented at the very end of a mystery.
Quick read, fizzled a little towards the end but still enjoyed.

Let me get this out of the way - I LOVED Magpie Murders. Couldn't wait to start this one. After a very slow beginning, I figured it would get better. 18 chapters later, I began to wonder exactly when would it get better? The murder happened, the suspects all introduced, so "let's present the clues and solve", I thought. (By this time, I already had a good idea who the killer was).

But no, it dragged on. That's when the book-within-the-book (which was done so well in Magpie) was getting started and since Susan was still prattling on about not much, I gave up. There's detail and then there's DETAIL. This book has a lot of it. There were far too many conversations, chapters, and musings that didn't add anything relevant, in my opinion.

I skipped the next 39 chapters to the big reveal (yes, it's THAT long). The best part being when one character pleaded "...get to the point...", to which I wholeheartedly agreed. After the Poirot moment, (I was right by the way and you will be too), there's an additional 1hr20m of ....who knows what.

VERY LONG STORY - most of which was nothing more than a repeat of what was already said. The side twists were not very interesting and after you hear the 1st one, all the rest are the same.
I devoured Magpie, this one sadly, not a winner for me.

Nice back story to one of the main characters. If you didn't watch the TV series, this book will probably not make sense. Watch the series first. Short - just long enough to explain the relationship between two of the major characters.
Excellent narration.

Couldn't even get past the 1st chapter. Worst audio/reading I've ever heard. Why was the reader snarling the entire time? She sounded like a 14 year old girl auditioning for the part of King Arthur in a high school play. Simply awful. The title character is a woman - that was lost in translation. Couldn't tell if the voice was the lead character talking or thinking, or another character talking or thinking or just the voice over/monologue. The main character had the same voice as her father and her stylist and the romantic interest. And it was an angry, sarcastic, tone throughout (Mind you, I never finished Chapter 1, so maybe it got better).
I was looking forward to the story, and tried to hang in there, but gave up. I hate returning things, but there are too many good reads out there.
This probably is one of those better read than heard.

Been a fan of Top Chef for years. Used to seeing Padma - slighly aloof, sometimes funny, mostly serious. This book and everything she shared was surprisingly personal. I wasn't expecting her to be as open. Was nice to hear about her culture and how much family and love means to her. Will forever see her in a different light.
The reading was excellent (she does a very good Brit accent). Especially at the end, you can really feel her sadness through the soft tone in her voice. Would have liked one more followup chapter to lighten it up a bit.
Overall - I enjoyed thoroughly. I've always loved Indian food - will appreciate a little bit more now.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Would recommend. Not the typical girl meets girl story; in this case, girl pays for girl. Good main characters and definitely steamy!

If you’ve listened to books by Hildred Billings and Cynthia Dane before, how does this one compare?

This is my first from these authors. Could definitely tell it was written by two people. Some chapters dragged on with more-than-required detail and superfluous dialogue, while others were shorter, to the point, more exciting, fast paced. The epilogue...totally unnecessary, wordy, and went nowhere. Sometimes it's OK to just give or imply the "happy" ending and leave the rest to the reader's imagination. This one tried to fill in all the gaps, answer all potential questions, and for me - spoiled it. I much preferred the way I envisioned their future. The epilogue felt like an attempt to appease every reader's personal viewpoints on the subject matter.

What three words best describe Stephanie Murphy’s voice?

Sometimes it was hard to distinguish which of the main characters was speaking. Especially difficult was knowing which was the characters "thoughts" vs "speaking". And if she said "excccuuuuuuseeee me" one more time.....

Any additional comments?

Worth a listen!

As a huge fan of Poirot and Miss Marple, even though I hadn't heard of this title, I had high hopes. After all, its a Christie!

The story started out great, the mystery was laid out, the characters were introduced and I looked forward to unraveling the mystery. When I realized I was only on chapter 14, based on the story so far, I couldn't imagine what might require another 16 chapters. That's where it went bad for me..... the story got convoluted with politics and underground militia. The detective was almost a background character while the most viable suspect was allowed to taint every crime scene and solve the murder. The whodunit was disappointing. I kept thinking "seriously?"

The best part..... listening to the voice of Capt Hastings doing the excellent narration.!!

I hate not finishing a book. I’m at chapter 17 and figured it was near a sweet happy ending. Was a real surprise to see I was only halfway through. The story for me, though a good premise, is starting to drag a bit. The characters are ok but I’m not invested as I have been with other reads.
The narration could’ve been better. The Southern bell sounded like the love child of Blanche Devereaux and Julia Sugarbaker, and not in a good way. ( if you don’t know who they are, google to see what I mean).
The men sounded...well, could’ve been better.
If I get to the end, I’ll update my review.....we’ll see.

If you've ever ready anything about the LOA, like Hill, Hicks, Byrne, then the concepts here will be very familiar.
I'll save you the $ - the emphasis here is this: pair your affirmative statement with something that's definitively true. The lesson being, you/your belief won't struggle so much with the "what I have now" vs "what I want" because the affirmation will be true. ex. I'm 5'6" tall and I attract lots of money.

Since the first part (for me) is undeniable, my mind will more readily soak that in without question.
Simple concept, but after a while the examples became somewhat silly. There's also one phrase that she keeps repeating. After chapter 3, I had to mute that part.
Doesn't mean I'm not going to try this method though. Can't hurt.

Really enjoyed this book. The narration was excellent. Story kept me guessing. So realistic was the main detective/character that I actually googled him hoping to find a series for my next read. Hah! Recommend it if you like Poirot or Marple.
