I didn’t care for it, but the authors seem like really cool guys.

Pros:
I think the concept of Life Design is worth of investigation and study. If this book made you think about being more intentional with your life, then it will be well worth the read.

Cons:
Many of the stories seem to be repetitive filler and/or not realistic.

Example: “Mary is a technical architectural design worker who both interacts with clients + actually does the design work. She doesn’t like interacting with clients, so she told her boss that she doesn’t want to do that any more. They applauded her bravery and told her she can just ignore that from now on.”

While not a literal quote, that’s the flow that many of the stories take. If only I could have just told my sales managers at prior jobs that I didn’t find cold calling “emotionally fulfilling”….lol they would have told me to get over it.

Other tools/exercise La provided require an unrealistic amount of effort from other people.

One suggestion is to enlist 5 friends into a committee to discuss your life strategy. My friends have jobs/families lol… I wouldn’t put that on them, even if they are wonderful friends.

Absolutely loved the balanced perspective and amount of detail in this book. The author manages to cover an enormous amount of information in an engaging narrative format.

It’s basically a very well recited list of major events that occurred in the Dark Ages. In some sense, it was exactly what I was looking for bc I felt that era was unknown to me.

The narrator added some funny intonations on the insults of certain historical figures. I enjoyed it but zoned out at parts.

Excellent summary of history on a war I knew little about

As I’ve started working through the Great Courses on American history, but I noticed I couldn’t find much information on the War of 1812, so decided to give this book a shot.

Overall it’s very well written and full of sound research and interesting nuggets of personal information about the key players. As a minor complaint, the author goes on several longer monologues refuting other historians’ “revisionist history” statements about certain historical events. While I appreciate addressing the body of written work provided by other authors, there are points where it gets boring...especially because I’d never heard those other historians’ claims.

It would be petty to mark a whole star down for that (as maybe these portions are 30-45 minutes of the whole book) so it’s still a 5 star in my opinion.

Read the book and you’ll have fun and learn a lot!

This book was a very solid refresher on history of the dark ages. It wasn’t particularly exciting, but I think that’s what you get for a book that covers such a broad topic. I look forward to finding more specific books about the interesting individuals I heard about here.

The entire book is fluff. No valuable insights. No cool stories. No actionable process.

Just the author rambling about his personal life and eventually tying it to the phrase “The customer isn’t done until they’ve said no.”

Narrator seemed a bit tired and raspy, but the book was an excellent reminder on some key aspects of building wealth. Thoroughly enjoyed and wouldn recommend.

Follow similar format as Richest Man in Babylon and The Greatest Salesman in The World. So if you liked those, you'll like this book.

What would have made Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, and It's All Small Stuff better?

The book was insanely boring and full of obvious advice. The author reads in a monotone voice while lecturing you on brilliant pieces of advice like "Remember not to interrupt people" or "Remember that your problems are not as bad as being dead or maimed"...

What could Richard Carlson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He could have written a more insightful book, one that hopefully had some interesting and engaging stories. I don't want to hear "you always feel good when you give to others" and bunch of other generalities about being a nicer person.

Would you be willing to try another one of Richard Carlson’s performances?

Monotone and boring.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

All of the above. I honestly lasted about 15 minutes through the audio book before falling asleep.

Any additional comments?

I have never written a review before on a book. Special circumstance required special action.
