But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

i resisted buying this book for a long time because it seemed too popular, and i thought i knew what it was. Turns out, i didn't really know that much...I purchased it on sale abd what a great surprise!
This thriller does not disappoint! I did not expect all of the various plot twists. I was on pins and needles all the way through but the end had me cheering for the Author, who had taken her readers on a very satisfying ride.
The narration was quite good, engaging and well done, soothing to listen to without putting you to sleep.
I was very excited to learn there are more books in the series, already listening to the next one. Highly recommend.

Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

hopelessly hooked on this series
Revisado: 03-24-23
This second installment about Mambo Reina Dumond (a New Orleans voudou practitioner who has a hobby of getting tangled up in detective work in her spare time) does not disappoint. I was surprised at many plot turns. I was NOT prepared for the end and yelled, "Noooooo!" because now I will have to wait until the next book to find out what happens next!!
I read the first book in the series on Kindle, but listened to the second, this book, on Audible. The narrator was excellent, although I thought she sounded sort of mature when voicing the main character, given that Reina is still young enough to be dreaming of having a daughter of her own..."someday..." as opposed to "asap before biological clock runs out." Perhaps Reina has longer on her clock because of her healing skills and supernatural abilities? in the end, it doesn't matter, I am spellbound.
This series has so many unique, complex characters, lovely settings, the intrigued feeling of getting a small peek behind the curtain of a faith im not familiar with, and the real life background history of Katrina keep it interesting from start to finish. I do hate Reina's love interest, and can't imagine what she sees in him. But that plotline appears to have interesting things in store for the future. I can't wait.
TL; DR I wish the author would release Volume 3 immediately. i am dying to know what will happen next. This series is awesome! You should read it.

In Nadežra, peace is as tenuous as a single thread. The ruthless House Indestor has been destroyed, but darkness still weaves through the city’s filthy alleys and jewel-bright gardens, seen by those who know where to look. Derossi Vargo has always known. He has sacrificed more than anyone imagines to carve himself a position of power and influence among the nobility, hiding a will of steel behind a velvet smile. He'll be damned if he lets anyone threaten what he's built.

Historia
More than 3,000 years have passed since the first events recorded in Dune. Only one link survives with those tumultuous times: the grotesque figure of Leto Atreides, son of the prophet Paul Muad'Dib, and now the virtually immortal God Emperor of Dune. He alone understands the future, and he knows with a terrible certainty that the evolution of his race is at an end unless he can breed new qualities into his species.

very entertaining, a few issues
Revisado: 02-27-22
I did love this story. it had all the elements: Seattle tech wizards, Russian mobsters, Chinese hackers, middle eastern terrorists, Idaho off grid gun nuts, and more. the action was nonstop, the pace breakneck. the narration was adequate, but only that. I agree with other reviews that said they wished the author had done more editing of the end when all elements converge. it seemed to drag on so long that I eventually stopped caring who lived and who died. I had mixed feelings about the cutesy romances that developed, they seemed highly unlikely. all that being said, I was highly entertained and frequently delighted during the first 3/4 of the story, laughed out loud several times. great characters. I recommend it.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Skip the movie, listen instead
Revisado: 12-11-21
Dune is a long read. It is a long listen, but a highly enjoyable one. No movie adaptation that I have seen has truly done the story complete justice. Listen to this audiobook first so you understand the entire back story. It makes the movie much easier to understand and follow.
I first read this book when I was 10 and thought it was great. Listening to the story today as a 55 year old woman, I am bothered by how patriarchal it all is. Men are rulers and warriors. women are chattel, people to impregnate or marry off to nobility for political reasons. The Bene Gesserit women are stronger characters than other females of the book, but their power comes from sheming, mysticism and conniving. It all still revolves around men in the end. I found that aspect of the story quite dated.
That being said, I still loved listening to this recording. Dune is a fascinating sci-fi saga with mystical and spiritual aspects. I could not stop listening. The entire cast was excellent. I love Simon Vance most of all, his voice makes me feel soothed. Ready to listen to the next book in the series.
