What an awesome reading this is. And the story itself is a masterpiece of the imagination.

This is one of Ibsen's masterpieces, along with the Wild Duck, but this is a very very different bird. There is very little action in this play, and very few characters. A great deal of the play revolves around the dialogue between Rebecca West and Johannes Rosmer. The two actors that play these characters are absolutely masterful in their roles. The performance (especially when played slowly at around 80 to 85 percent of its standard speed) is astonishingly good. The two characters are not what they seem, and as the 19th century social conventions are slowly peeled away, we see two very very different characters emerge and tangle with one another. It's a haunting performance that will stay with you for a long long time.

Overall, after listening to Guidall read about 1/4 of the novel, I'm finding little to like here. I don’t know whether to place the blame on the reader or on the author. I don’t much care for Guidall's delivery. I suspect that that he felt his crusty delivery contributed to the overall effect of the work. But in reality, there is plenty of crustiness already in the Sammler character itself, without more being injected into it. As a result, it is quite tiresome to listen to. This just goes to show how important a reader's voice is in an audio book. There are voices that grate on one after awhile, as in this case.

Some familiarity with the story and the characters is necessary in order to enjoy this work. The actors are quite good, but the audience is a real distraction. Someone listening to this might also enjoy the movie version, starring Annette Bening and Saoirse Ronan. Both versions are excellent, and they complement one another.

This is a stunning performance of Ibsen's masterpiece. It opens up a strange world that will make you want to return repeatedly to witness it unfolding. An amazing work, and an amazing performance!

Arthur Morey does okay on this difficult work, and he is not responsible for the gradual turn-off that unfolds when listening to this overly complicated work. The fault lies squarely with Nabokov himself. It's difficult to understand what he was thinking when he wrote this novel. It's a wilderness of mirrors. The excessive preoccupation with the sexuality of his characters can be accepted, but the twin Earth, twin everything, theme is just too much, at least for me. Perhaps I will eventually get used to it, but it is a slow, confusing, unpleasant experience so far. Not for the faint-hearted.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. It's repetitious and pompous.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I have no idea.

Did Tony Kosinec do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Tony is a good narrator; he cannot be faulted. But Laitman's text just drones on and on, endlessly repetitious, and goes nowhere. I was unable to listen to the whole thing.

Did Attaining the Worlds Beyond inspire you to do anything?

Yes. Initially it was inspiring to listen to, but then after listening to several hours, it was clearly moving into fanatical waters. I had to back out. In future I will avoid being sucked into this kind of endless black hole of pseudo-spirituality.

Any additional comments?

Yes. I suspect my review will be deleted, since only positive reviews of Laitman's work are permitted to survive on Audible and Amazon.
