Sudhir Venkatesh, acclaimed sociologist at Columbia University and author of Gang Leader for a Day, returns to the streets to connect the dots of New York's divergent economic worlds and crack the code of the city's underground economy. Based on Venkatesh's interviews with prostitutes and socialites, immigrants and academics, high end drug bosses and street-level dealers, Floating City exposes the underground as the city's true engine of social transformation and economic prosperity - revealing a wholly unprecedented vision of New York.

A weak follow up
Revisado: 08-24-23
I loved his Gang Leader for a Day book. This one feels way to personal and fullnof his own bitterness leaking in to his objectivity. This felt more like a diatribe than a study in sociology.

Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Every book is a masterwork.
Revisado: 08-20-23
I can't recommend this series highly enough.
The 1st book came out about 10 years ago. It was originally a trilogy and if you stop after the 3rd book you will be completely satisfied with the narrative arc.
But Brown revived the series. I was honestly worried it was a cash grab and he was going ruin a good thing. The 6th bookin the series, Light Bringer, came out.
a few weeks ago and I'm halfway through it. Brown has not disappointed me yet!
This isn't just some fantasy sci-fi schick either. Each book is a masterwork in drama, sacrifice, love, betrayal coupled with graphic war scenes, blood, guts, and assholes.
I guess the best way to describe it is if the Harry Potter houses competed in the Hunger Games and was set in the War Hammer 40k universe with the lore depth of Lord of the Rings.
I have listened to them all on Audible and believe it's a must to fully appreciate the characters. Tim Gerard Reynolds really brings them to life. With such a large cast of characters the voice help keep them straight.
Don't let the synopsis fool you. There's something in here for every one. Even Monni read the original trilogy.
If someone would develop this in to movies/series it could be a huge success.

Historia
Malcolm Gladwell has long relished the opportunity to skewer the upper echelons of higher education, from the institution of U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings to the LSATs to the luxe Bowdoin College cafeteria. I Hate the Ivy League: Riffs and Rants on Elite Education, upends the traditional thinking around how education should work and tries to get to the bottom of why we often reward the wrong people.

Meh
Revisado: 08-01-23
I've read every book Gladwell has written.
This one doesn't even belong on the list.
First off, it's just a repackaging of freely available podcasts.
Secondly, it feels more like an apology tour for the under performing than a look at the education system.
Finally, Gladwell's bias is always at the forefront of these stories. It comes off more like he's trying to prove his opinions rather than show a complete picture.

King is obsessed with Trump
Revisado: 08-15-21
He mentions Trump/MAGA over a dozen times in the book. It's awkward because it feels so forced and out of context.
Trump is living in his head rent free and it's obvious in his recent books.

Black detective talks on phone alot
Revisado: 08-06-18
Boring story with equally boring narration. The author/narrator sounds like he's on the verge of falling asleep at times and slurs his words. The story is very anticlimactic.
The black 'Klamsman' literally only talks to suspects on the phone. Others are sent in to do any actual face to face work. In the end all he managed to accomplish was derail a couple cross burnings by low-level KKK members.
The afterword is used to bash Republicans and Trump and really politicizes an already lackluster story.

Narrated by MICROSOFT SAM
Revisado: 04-06-18
this is possibly the worst narration I have heard in an audiobook. The story is good but the narration makes it almost unfinishable. The narrator enunciates his words very strangely with hard t's and ing's. it is bad to the point of almost feeling like it is a joke. it literally sounds like someone copied the entirety of the book and pasted it into a Microsoft Sam prompt and hit play.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.
