Historia
For two years, England has been in the grip of Civil War. In Banbury, Oxfordshire, the Cavaliers hold the castle, the Roundheads want it back and the town is full of zealous Puritans. Consequently, the gulf between Captain Justin Ambrose and Abigail Radford, the sister of a fanatically religious shopkeeper, ought to be unbridgeable. The key to both the fate of the castle and that of Justin and Abigail lies in defiance...but will it be enough?

a slog
Revisado: 02-14-25
Ugh this book was such a slog. Almost all the characters were either unlikable or despicable, and the main female character was so mousy. The story could have been alright if it were half as long.

Historia
The marriage of a well-bred Royalist lady and an illegitimate Roundhead Colonel is less a match made in heaven than a union doomed to hell. Unfortunately, Sir Robert Brandon's last will and testament leaves Venetia Clifford and Gabriel Brandon with little choice in the matter - deeply though they both resent it. Their tempestuous relationship is reflected in the stormy events buffeting the nation as England slides inexorably into a second Civil War.

so boring
Revisado: 10-02-24
I have liked many of her books, but this one was so boring. It droned on and on about the politics of England and had almost no character development so it was hard to be interested. I ended up not finishing it.

such a good story
Revisado: 04-11-24
I have listened to dozens of historical romance novels and this is one of my favorites! It focuses on the characters, their personalities and feelings, and setting. Not too much political detail, etc. Just a great love story.

boring
Revisado: 02-04-24
I really wanted to like this first book in her new series. It was just so boring. Her earlier books are so much better. Her new books continue to move away from the interior emotional lives of her characters and their relationships with one another, and more towards logistics, settings, and politics which are difficult to follow and boring.

The love scenes are so drawn out it gets boring. There is an imbalance between the plot and these scenes. The characters can be annoying. I wouldn't recommend.

When she becomes queen, all Europe turns against England.

Not his best
Revisado: 02-16-23
I have loved two of his other books but this was too choppy, predictable, and obviously anti-Catholic. Awful people exist in all facets of life, but this book repeats the mundane fallacy that all religious men in high positions are greedy and evil. To be fair I did not listen past chapter 8.

I forced myself to finish this sloppily written, boring and predictable book. I have listened to dozens of LeVeque's books and while she isn't a literary genius I enjoy them a lot. This one though, no thanks!

Historia
The Covert Passive Aggressive Narcissist: Finding Healing After Hidden Emotional and Psychological Abuse is the most comprehensive and helpful audiobook on the topic of covert narcissism. This type of narcissism is one of the most damaging forms because the abuse is so hidden and so insidious. You can be in a relationship that can last for decades and not realize you are being psychologically and emotionally controlled, manipulated, and abused.

Good info but too squishy
Revisado: 05-31-21
Lots of good info, but I could have done without all the "you are so awesome" sappy commentary. There are also a lot of personal stories, which I find unhelpful compared to straightforward analysis and description. Slow narrator, 1.25 speed was perfect. This would be good for someone starting their healing journey, but if you're already part of the way there expect to skip big chunks of the book.
