Historia
A masterpiece of deep learning and fine sensibility, Robert Alter's translation of the Hebrew Bible, now complete, reanimates one of the formative works of our culture. Capturing its brilliantly compact poetry and finely wrought, purposeful prose, Alter renews the Old Testament as a source of literary power and spiritual inspiration. From the family frictions of Genesis and King David's flawed humanity to the serene wisdom of Psalms and Job's incendiary questioning of God's ways, these magnificent works of world literature resonate with a startling immediacy.

The author & narrator were superb; Audible NOT!
Revisado: 12-15-24
A great book got better with Edoardo Ballerini. Thank you for your superb work, Sir!
Doctor Alter continues to educate and inspire me. Occasionally, he forces me to ponder and question his conclusions. Truly these are the traits of the greatest teachers!
Audible had two great failings:
1. The "table of contents" is ONLY sequential. For example; Genesis 1, Genesis 2, Genesis 3... That's a lot of scrolling if you want to access Ruth 2...which is in the last section of the Bible (Ketuvim, the Writings). This is totally unsatisfactory and there's only one place that is worse in my experience: the JPS Tanakh where there's NO chapter headings and WORSE, the section headings are in Hebrew...a language understood by less than 1% of the world's population.
2. The footnotes are NOT included. Several other Audible books have footnotes included. Why not Doctor Alter's?
Still, i am grateful for the great work done by both author and narrator and a great companion for my walking.

Historia
Thumbing across the scorched West Texas desert, loner Jack Reacher has nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is pretty Carmen Greer. But for Reacher, the lift comes with a hitch. Carmen's got a story to tell, and it's a wild one. All about her husband, her family secrets, and a hometown that's pure Gothic. She's also got a plan. Jack Reacher's part of it. And before the sun sets, this ride could cost them both their lives.

Implausible but entertaining
Revisado: 06-12-21
Unlikely situations led to improbable events. I seriously considered exchanging this for another BUT my level of membership does not permit exchanges. Still, I was doing heavy labor and needed to "read" (hear) something that would help me through the days. As I listened on, I realized that the actions and details were entertaining. Dick Hill, the reader was excellent and changed tone and accent in keeping with the gender/background of the characters.. "Lee Child" does a great job with many details about American life...but his grasp of hitchhiking is limted. It might be time for Jack Reacher to find a new way to get around the country. Still, i'll keep listening to his books AND hope to rate other stories higher.

Historia
The Seven Storey Mountain is the extraordinary spiritual testament of Thomas Merton (1915-1968), a man who experienced life to its fullest in the world before entering a Trappist monastery. By the end of his life, he had become one of the 20th century's best-known and beloved Christian voices. This autobiography deals...not with what happens to a man, but what happens inside his soul.

A Great Book, A Great Reader And A Sorry Excerpt
Revisado: 10-08-20
Thomas Merton wrote a wonderful book about his journey to healthy spirituality. As the narrator, Sidney Lanier seamlessly helped me hear a voice that might have been that of the author.
A reviewer called Janet summed up my thoughts very well. She wrote, "Woefully incomplete audio version of a great work." I was gravely disappointed to realize that Audible chose to record such a small portion of the book. I am an old man and like to listen to books as I walk. Thus, I was surprised and saddened to hear the words, "Thank you for listening" in such a short period of time.
On the plus side, I borrowed a copy from the library and look forward to reading the WHOLE book.
Still, I am very grateful to have heard the words of Thomas Merton in the voice of Sidney Lanier.

A great book...after fixing download!
Revisado: 02-25-19
Before buying the Kindle version to study, I checked out the hardcover from the library. The Kindle version is a good and faithful version.
However, the chapters in the Audible version did NOT match the book. I sought solutions but only saw complaints on the internet (that is, no solutions).
Part of me wants to detail my (mis)adventures at Customer Service. However, Judy (the Audible rep) eventually found a solution IF YOU ARE USING IOS. (Apple):
1. Go to "My Library" and left-swipe the title to "Delete from this device."
2. Go to "Home" then "Settings" then "Dowload by Parts" and choose "Multi-part." (Click okay when you get the warning about syncing.)
3. Go back to "My Library" and click download. (You will need to click all parts...but don't panic...because you won't have as many parts as chapters.)
FINALLY: Enjoy your Audible book with the chapters in the right order!
