Delectable and further empowering of a Queen
Revisado: 10-30-19
Padme Amidala is a powerful character in the SW universe, and “Queen’s Shadow” provides a foundation for such strength. Through a brilliant telling of her life after serving as queen, Johnston provides us with a deep and resonant story of Padme’s journey to the strong senator we see on screen. There’s significant input from the Handmaidens, which is a personal favorite. And on top of everything else, Padme is a distinct supporter of transgender rights by advocating for the respect of an individual’s chosen name.
Listen to this. Multiple times. It just might motivate you to be daring and stand up when others insist you sit down.

Historia
Women are angry, and it isn’t hard to figure out why. We are underpaid and overworked. Too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Too dowdy or too made-up. Too big or too thin. Sluts or prudes. We are harassed, told we are asking for it, and asked if it would kill us to smile. Yes, yes it would. Contrary to the rhetoric of popular “self-help” and an entire lifetime of being told otherwise, our rage is one of the most important resources we have, our sharpest tool against both personal and political oppression.

Rage Becomes Her
Revisado: 10-19-18
In this incredibly timely piece, Soraya Chemaly delves into the reality that anger as an emotion has been encouraged in masculine forms and suppressed in feminine. While her work focuses on women (rightly so), Chemaly is praise worthy in her inclusion of LGBT people who have largely been relegated to the sidelines in discussions about anger and violence.
This book is world shaking. Read it. Share it. Hear it. Get angry.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 09-03-17
If you're a Star Wars fan, you must have considered the severe differences in the upbringing of Luke and Leia. Perhaps, like me, you thought Luke really did get the shaft. While I'm unsure whether or not my feelings on that matte have changed, I can say that Leia: Princess of Alderaan made me rethink my assumptions of growing up as a princess. This story is well written, and wonderfully narrated. Questions and concerns are answered, even if you never knew they existed. These mysteries may or may not make up for the lack of "action", though if you appreciate the confusing state of affairs which the Star Wars universe calls politics, you will surely love this!
***Spoiler***ish
What happens when Leia encounters close former friends of Padme?! You'll find out!!!

Un-Surprisingly, Beautiful
Revisado: 04-13-17
Zahn and Thompson come together once more to weave an exceptional story! Zahn has woven another patch into the quilt that is Star Wars. His writing is superb, and thankfully we have someone just as brilliant to narrate! I can not applaud this enough! I also plan on purchasing the physical copy, because apparently there is a pull out poster featuring the Grand Admiral himself! But do yourself a favor and jump into this audiobook!
A few notable aspects that I can remember (re listening after this!) NO SPOILERS!
The story of Thrawn's ascendancy to Grand Admiral.
The unique Chiss twist of the importance in utilizing and preserving resources, which bordered on compassion for others.
The tie in to Star Wars Rebels! Providing a really rich background into why certain events occurred in the show.
A beautiful balance of political intrigue (which I ABSOLUTELY love in the Star Wars universe!), and intense action scenes!
One detail I really appreciated was the depiction and hesitance of Coruscant's underbelly. We typically see this through the eyes of force wielders or soldiers, neither of which really experience the emotions that an everyday person would when confronted with the slums.

Historia
Lolth has come out of hibernation with a plan that may seem too ambitious even for her, and to pull it off she'll need the help of a drow who's betrayed her at least once already--a drow she's transformed into the demonic Lady Penitent. The shocking conclusion to a trilogy that will change the Forgotten Realms world forever.

So much potential....
Revisado: 05-26-16
This is literally my favorite story in the Forgotten Realms series, as Eilistraee's faith has always been so unique, and I had high hopes going into the series. I listened to each book of the Lady Penitent, always eager to move forward to the next book to relive the adventure, but wincing with each uttered word of the series' namesake: Hallistra Malarn, the 'Lady Penitent'. While Dara Rosenburg stumbles her way through the Realms, the most tragic part (other than some spoilers that truly rend the heart) is that she is unable to properly pronounce the word 'penitent'. Every time this character is mentioned, which is a lot, Dara Rosenburg pronounces the name as 'the Lady Pen-t-itent'. Pentitent is not a word. Penitent is. I had to get the physical copies of my books out just to make sure I wasn't crazy.
I urge anyone considering this story, or any of Lisa Smedman's other stories, please treat yourself to these amazing adventures in the Realms!! Lose yourself in the tragedy and heroics that dance through these pages! But please, but the physical copy! Turn those pages to find out what happens to Cavatina, Hallistra, Qulue, and all of Eilistraee's followers. And then, once you've experienced the journey, download the audiobook. As a grad student and full time worker, my time is limited (especially any time I consider reading for pleasure), so Audible is a fantastic way to indulge my need to escape to the Realms; however this narrator can never give this story justice, leaving it as a shoddy way of reliving the tales I love.
