I want to start this review by saying that perhaps I am not in this book's target audience. While I enjoy nature, I am much more of a city girl. With that in mind, I found this book so boring and repetitive. This book is also slow moving and I think that it could be cut in half and be much more enjoyable. The premise is that the protagonist is tired of her life in NYC and has decided to escape to a small town. While that sounded good to me (We all need a break to recharge at some point) the incessant descriptions of the landscape, of how the air smelled, and of how the ground felt under her shoes became quite tedious to me. Also, the main character was so self-centered. I realize that while most people have time periods of being completely egotistical, this is not something I prefer to read about. During most of the book, I was irritated with her for how she treats the significant people in her life. I like to be able to root for the main character of a book. I waffled between liking the narrator (she did put emotion in her storytelling) to disliking the Kennedy-esque accents of the local townsfolk. Overall, if you really enjoy long winded descriptions of nature or of the protagonists self obsessed feelings this book is for you. If not, buy with caution.

I really enjoyed this book. The book spans from the time the protagonist was a teen to her thirties. The majority of the book uses the format where there is a chapter in the present followed by a chapter in the past. The only reason that I give the story 4 stars is because sometimes it was confusing to know if the story being told was in the past or present. I probably was not paying close enough attention. Based on other people's reviews, I would guess that if you have a strong moral objection to prostitution this book is not for you. The book does not glamorize prostitution or have explicit sexual scenes, but it does play a large part in the protagonist's story. Overall, great book that I could not stop listening to.

Nice book and easy listen. One thing that was quite distracting was that the narrator's voice was so robotic! Overall, the story was entertaining and the protagonist and other characters were likable, if one dimensional. While I generally love book series and usually am anxious to read more, I am not sure that I will continue this one. This may be one that I continue by just reading and not listening to an audiobook, as I have a feeling I would like it more without the narrator's voice.

This book was a nice, easy listen. The story was good, though a bit predictable. The main character, Jane, can be funny at times. While the main character's voice was fine, some of the other character's delivery was off. For example, every time one of the supporting character's talked it sounded like he was chewing gum! Mild issue, but could be quite annoying over the course of the series. Overall, I will probably listen to the entire series as I do like light books every once in a while that don't require much thinking.

I'm a big fan of Gillian Flynn and I have listened to her other two books. Like the other two, this is a great mystery; however, the story is definitely DARK. The main character is somewhat frustrating at times and the story starts a bit slowly but overall it is a good read. The story goes back and forth from the present and past. While at first I did not like this format, it really helped flesh out the story in an interesting way. Like the other two books I found myself thinking about the story for days after I finished it. While Dark Places is not as good as Gone Girl or Sharp Objects, it is a solid read. The narrator's performance was good and didn't detract from the story.
