So. Very. Boring.
Revisado: 07-15-23
Honestly, I’ve never given up on a book. I trudged my way through 3/4 of the book and just couldn’t waste a single moment more. Weird story that is equal parts unlikely and uninteresting.

Boring, rushed, yuck
Revisado: 02-14-22
This short story took me AGES to get through. Completely devoid of substance, next to no character building, and aside from a snooze fest, it was aggravating that this could be published and considered literature.
I’ve never quit on a book, so I finished this one eventually, and even at the conclusion I wanted to chuck my phone at the wall.

Kelsey Phillips is over the dating scene. All that time and energy perfecting your profile and taking just the right picture and articulating exactly what you’re looking for, only to get the same sleazy propositions? No, thanks. She’s doing just fine on her own, so there’s no point in a fruitless hunt for “the one” that doesn’t exist. Besides, she already has the perfect man in her life. Theo is the type of friend who’s always there for a laugh, a hug, or a drink - and no propositions.

Did anyone proofread?
Revisado: 12-14-21
This was the most poorly written book I’ve read in quite a while. First, it reads as though there was a different writer each chapter. The main character constantly contradicts her narrative and it’s not intentional. The cousin is described as an only child at the beginning of the book, only later to have a brother later in the story. The faulty narratives are distracting and rather frustrating. Makes you wonder if anyone read the story prior to publishing.

Implausible and tacky
Revisado: 10-05-21
This book was a scattered mess of (mostly) shallow characters and loose storylines. I get wanting to create sexy scenes, but at least make the characters and their lives richer and more believable. Ugh.

Historia
Ever notice that sometimes a guy will do something really stupid, like let the love of his life slip through his fingers? Yeah. I'm that guy. But the instant I run into her again I've got one goal and one goal only—a second chance. The plan? Go big or go home. Fine, at first glance, stripping naked at my ex-girlfriend's place of work might not seem like the brightest way to win her heart again. But trust me on this count—she always liked me best without any clothes on. And sometimes you've got to play to your strengths when you're fighting an uphill battle.

Did the author even try?
Revisado: 04-03-20
I had committed myself to these books because they allow for multitasking, bring mostly just joy, and fall directly into the “guilty pleasure” genre. This book was unbelievably irritating from the beginning. I actually triple checked my device to see if it had skipped forward somewhere. The author seems to have taken her audience as the unthinking, uncaring about details type. Almost feels like an insult. I had forgiven all the previous books for their form-fitting, one style fits all plot, in favor of the lightness of listen-ability and sweetness of characters. I had forgiven the fact that we never really get a real character with family, friends, complicated histories (and not the faux-complications of strictly heartbroken or committed to singledom), etc., but really, in this book the characters were supposedly madly in love, boy dumps girl to pursue his career, let’s YEARS go by, then sees her at the park and decided to relentlessly pursue her again (and seriously, if their love was so deep and the breakup so painful and abrupt, are we to really believe neither has looked the other up on social media? That they haven’t had in-common friends that reported on them? That they’d honestly just move on without trying to reconnect sooner?). Then, if it wasn’t bad enough, we are to believe that they wouldn’t have issues about what has transpired over the years? And the ridiculous “drama” about the father that never matriculates or even seems to mean anything, nor the reader ever interacting with any family members?
This book was obviously written in a few days. She followed all her other plot lines and skeleton-line character portrayals, but ran into the problem of being out of ideas for life dramas and ways that some people actually would find themselves reconnecting after such a stretch.
If my ex (no matter how much I thought of him) turned up at my massage studio and got completely naked to show how much he wants me back, I’d consider calling the mental asylum. What an absolute cocky asshole! And for her to swoon all over it is repulsive. If they had reconnected, gave it a go for a while, then the guy wanted to be risqué and drop his drawers at her place of employment, fine, go for it. But to make that his “I want you back even though I’ve just seen you for the first time in eight or so years and I’m thinking getting naked and shocking you will do the trick,” is insane.
It’s safe to say it’s time to move on from Ms. Blakely until she proves that she cares about turning out better quality stuff.
Sorry for the rant. I don’t usually review books whether I like them or not, but this was shockingly maddening.

Odd mishmash of a story
Revisado: 12-06-19
First, I didn’t like either narrator and neither fit the persona being described by the author.
Second, there was no real central point of the story. Felt like we were just getting a glimpse of a few months of the lives of a couple getting together. Of course there was some drama surrounding both characters, but the main character’s crazy mother was a wacky, absurdly designed character with very low believability. The other main character’s ex-wife was also a strange character. Her seemingly dual-personality was at odds with how she obviously raised three brilliant and kind children and was a seemingly loving and headstrong wife. The post-divorce weirdness would seem a complete over dramatic characterization that also just didn’t fit the person described.
There were a few stories and characters that were built up and left you wanting more resolution—like the meth dealer and even the odd stalker and sweet ex-husband.
Overall, the story was sloppy and unbelievable. The characters weren’t believable, nor people I felt an attachment to. The narration was by two overdramatic (she whiny and he too gruff) narrators that didn’t fit the described characters and were irritating.
Pass on this story.

Nothing good ever comes from drinking a box of wine alone. So when I decided to entertain my drunken self by setting up some hand-me-down podcasting equipment and reading the steamy parts from romance novels, I never thought anyone would actually listen. The fact that I admitted my huge crush on my sexy next door neighbor made the whole thing even more mortifying. But sometimes life surprises you, and that’s how my podcast, Heidi’s Discount Erotica, was born. Now I, Heidi Larsen, a sweet former kindergarten teacher in Waconia, Minnesota, lead a scandalous double life.

Great story, inconsistent narration.
Revisado: 09-10-19
First of all, I am a mega fan of Andi Arndt. Unfortunately, her narration annoyed me throughout many parts of the book. I get that she was going for the stereotypical Minnesotan accent, but it felt overdone and a bit ridiculous. Not to mention, the character had it strong sometimes, then others lacked it entirely.
For the story, I genuinely loved it. I found it a very sweet, funny, relatable tale. I highly recommend the book, it’s worth a credit or purchase. I do wish, however, that it could be re-recorded for consistency.
