I never knew how difficult it could be for a person who was apathetic to survive and thrive. I hope this book is helpful to those who need it.

I am curious to know whether Patric’s techniques would be of use to sociopaths incarcerated for already having given in to their evil urges.

This book opened my eyes to the experience of women both during their Vietnam service and after their homecoming. It also helped me better understand PTSD experienced by anyone who went through wartime experiences.

Loved the story but the book was so long that I forgot the details of some of the strands by the time they came together. I’d read anything this author writes!

I wish I had read this book as a 12 year old but now that I’m 70 year old grandmother I’m glad to have finally read it.

Illegal border crossing told from a 9 year old’s perspective

This story of dangerous border crossings is unique because it’s beautifully told from the perspective of an 9 year old child traveling alone. He is lucky because he arrives physically intact into his parents’ arms. Too many do not.
We the readers benefit from the fact that the 9 year old ends up a gifted writer who provides us with the sights, smells, tastes, sounds and emotions he experiences, making us feel as though we’re traveling with him.

Slow insightful story of an uninsightful college professor

Most books are about exceptional people and/or unusual circumstances. This beautifully written (but slow) and thought provoking novel is about an college professor and his very ordinary life. If you start to find it boring, speed up the pace to 1.5X. Worthwhile listening until the end! Food for thought.

I learned a lot about the English women forcibly sent to Australia!

Lots of books about male not female convicts being exiled to Australia. Once accused, assumed guilty and shipped off for what became a life sentence of servitude.
I enjoyed the interweaving of the stories of an aboriginal girl forcibly exiled from her own family with the story of an exiled convict woman and her daughter.

Not saccharine. Well written. Very Well read. Recommended.

After getting into the groove, I loved the book. I’m glad the authors chose to create this novel fleshing out Elizabeth as a multidimensional person. Kudos to the writers/editors for stitching together the two authors to sound like one voice.

My only disappointment was that (according to the epilogue) so many of the human aspects of the story had to be pieced together from the limited documents available regarding Elizabeth.

I had to stop after a half an hour. The readers were overly dramatic (melodramatic) and annoying. It was not a big loss because it was a freebie.

As others have said, the characters are interesting and author’s narration terrific but the doggedness of Herbie, the father’s pursuit of the English professor was bizarre. I enjoyed listening, particularly the inclusion of Larry King and the New Yorker Magazine’s Joseph Mitchell.
