Historia
We live in a world of seeds. From our morning toast to the cotton in our clothes, they are quite literally the stuff and staff of life, supporting diets, economies, and civilizations around the globe. Just as the search for nutmeg and the humble peppercorn drove the Age of Discovery, so did coffee beans help fuel the Enlightenment and cottonseed help spark the Industrial Revolution. And from the fall of Rome to the Arab Spring, the fate of nations continues to hinge on the seeds of a Middle Eastern grass known as wheat.

Terrible
Revisado: 08-25-24
This is a terrible book. More personal stories about harvesting peas and drying his son off with a towel with a few facts you can find from Wikipedia than any real science

Great story, so so writing
Revisado: 11-06-23
Kudos to the author for telling this story Solid research so I give him a pass that the writing was so so and a little cliche
The first narrator almost made me want to quit- she sounded like she was reading to a kindergarten class. Second narrator better but corny Third - eh. I’m just used to better narrators

Historia
Queens of a Fallen World tells a story of betrayal, love, and ambition in the ancient world as seen through a woman's eyes. Historian Kate Cooper introduces us to four women whose hopes and plans collided in Augustine's early adulthood: his mother, Monnica of Thagaste; his lover; his fiancée; and Justina, the troubled empress of ancient Rome. Drawing upon their depictions in the Confessions, Cooper skilfully reconstructs their lives against the backdrop of their fourth-century society. Though they came from different walks of life, each found her own way of prevailing in a world ruled by men.

New look at Augustine
Revisado: 10-23-23
Interesting look at some women in Augustine’s life and times - his mother, his mistress and Empress Justine (none of whom were queens but okay..,)
This was a new look at Augustine and shows him with a more positive opinion of women and marriage than he usually gets credit for.
Also a less positive view of Ambrose who was more of a political player (and sometime asshole) than he is usually portrayed.

Historia
When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―rendering the ancient poem in contemporary language that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

Empires and Barbarians presents a fresh, provocative look at how a recognizable Europe came into being in the first millennium AD. With sharp analytic insight, Peter Heather explores the dynamics of migration and social and economic interaction that changed two vastly different worlds--the undeveloped barbarian world and the sophisticated Roman Empire--into remarkably similar societies and states.

Historia
In April of 1846, 21-year-old Sarah Graves, intent on a better future, set out west from Illinois with her new husband, her parents, and eight siblings. Seven months later, after joining a party of pioneers led by George Donner, they reached the Sierra Nevada Mountains as the first heavy snows of the season closed the pass ahead of them. In early December, starving and desperate, Sarah and 14 others set out for California on snowshoes and over the next 32 days endured almost unfathomable hardships and horrors.

Wish he’d stuck Sarah’s Story
Revisado: 09-21-23
This was pretty interesting but I wish he would have stuck to his focus on the story from the perspective of Sarah Graves because that was the interesting part.
Instead he’s suddenly decide he was writing a science textbook on the effects of snow blindness or hypothermia or hunger and go on and on ..,
Then he decided to veer of into American history of morticians and Christmas and how Robert E. Lee’s family celebrated Christmas
Or maybe it was a book about psychology and the effects trauma and stress
Like did he think this was a high school essay with a minimum word requirement.
No book can be all the things and by getting sidetracked by all the things it too away from what could have been a good story from one family member’s perspective.

I just have to say his blaming the French Revolution on Marie Antoinette, saying “even if she didn’t say ‘Let them eat cake’ she thought it” WITH NO EVIDENCE OR SOURCES to back it up kinda made me suspect his bias and everything he said,

Historia
What is Western Civilization? According to Professor Noble, it is "much more than human and political geography," encompassing myriad forms of political and institutional structures - from monarchies to participatory republics - and its own traditions of political discourse. It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

Engrossing Tale of
Revisado: 08-27-20
Magical telling of the historical event of the Glencoe massacre and a legend of a witch, Corrag who warned the MacDonalds to flee.
The story is told by alternating first person points of view, by Coragg herself mostly as she speaks of her life to Charles Leslie, a real person who supported the Jacobite uprisings and then his view through his letters to his wife.
The style took me a while to get used to but once I did I was as drawn into the world entirely. It’s marvelous story telling. I wept through most of it, not just for the sadness in the tale but the real themes of love and grace and goodness.
