In this relatively short series of recollections written in the midst of his stardom, Sanders reflects what made him so beloved by audiences: He is dashing and urbane while being deliciously self-effacing. The only downside to this audiobook is that it is read by someone else rather than the author who had one of the most pleasing baritones of the era. Otherwise, this is a delightful listen to a criminally underrated Hollywood memoir from one of its similarly under appreciated thespians.

The Test of Whether You Could Really Listen to Matt Berry Read the Phonebook

As a fan of the absurdist comedy, I was excited to dive further into the unique world of Steven Toast and his compatriots. However, the reflections of this fictional thespian are esoteric and bizarre. Aside from a few humorous “Toast Tips” to aspiring actors, there is very little comedic value to this book. Nor does it provide any significant world building to other fan favorites such as Ray “Bloody” Purchase or Ed Howzer-Black. The one highlight is, as always, the delightful Matt Berry whose outlandish pronunciations and brief asides reward those who can suffer through these otherwise unamusing anecdotes.

In a classic performance worthy of the material, narrator David Horovitch delivered a litnay of characters with an abundance of voices to bring Hašek’s work to life. This is the best English adaptation of the beloved prize idiot Svejk’s adventures brimming with humor at every encounter!

Excellent narration but the protagonist could “tire a dead man.”

Jeff Woodman and John Randolph Jones provide spectacular performances as the cast and the "radio," respectively. Woodman's ability to provide each character with a unique tone and Jones' nostalgic homage to radio programs of the past make the story come alive for listeners. The only issue with the performance is that, unlike the classic radio programs presented here, there are no sound effects or a musical score to enhance the world Woodman and Jones create. As for the book's plot, the protagonist (Frankie) is exacerbating even for a children's story. An overactive imagination enhanced by a truly unbelievable obsession with radio leads our hero and his sidekick, Mario, into increasingly ridiculous scenarios. The pay-off of his plans, along with most of the loose threads of the work, is quickly jammed into the final chapters. At the same time, listeners spend most of the work listening to him aggravate his teacher or torture a medical student tenant living with his family. The only break from Frankie's fantastical statements and schemes comes from snippets of radio programs from The Lone Ranger to Flash Gordon. It is a beautiful introduction for children to a bygone form of media, but the protagonists' actions are not something a parent would ever want a child to mimic.

From the cast to the music to the sound effects, this is a wholly immersive LOTR experience, and there is a reason why it is a classic!

Jones’ work deftly covers the development of Medieval England under the Plantagenets. In addition to regaling listeners with the familiar legendary lives of figures such as St. Thomas Beckett and Edward, the Black Prince who shaped this Era, Jones is willing to delve into the evolution of English society, ecclesiastical development, and Parliamentary procedures. A must-listen for both casual and serious historians of this transformative English Dynasty.
