I still love Ms. Beadle after reading this, even more.
Revisado: 09-02-24
I am a little house on the prairie fan and always thought the school teacher was sexy and kind. Turns out her real life personality is a lot like her character, but not in the obvious ways. polar opposites in some ways, but in what really matters in life she is just like her Character on Little House. She was very honest about her life and I commend and respect her for that.

Excellent read/listen
Revisado: 08-19-24
I thought this was a great book. The way it was performed made me feel as if I was watching a movie. It captured my attention so much that I listned to it all the way through without stopping. There were times it got a bit confusing with the characters, but that also could be that I listened all the way through and my brain was tired and I drifted in places. But, I always came back and figured out what was going on. I was unable to tell who committed the crime even though I thought I had and these types of books are great as well as movies like this. I like being surprised at the end. I thought this book was well written and thought out and its prose was very beautiful at times. Definitely worth my time. I really like when many actors/narrators read it in such a way that it feels like a movie. I am hooked on these audible originals.

Roger Stringer grew up in rural Mississippi, hunting and eating everything from deer to rabbits. When he had two sons, Zac and Justin, he gave them guns and took them to the woods as well. Then one day when the boys were home alone, he got a call from Zac that Justin had been shot. What follows is an intimate and gripping memoir about the shooting’s aftermath. The story moves between the perspectives of Roger and Zac as they take us through their journey of betrayal, redemption, and ultimately confrontation with a company that had kept its corruption a secret for decades.

Tragic
Revisado: 01-26-24
This is tragic all the way around. I am glad they told their story and hope others are spared trauma because of it. It's criminal that big corporations can put dangerous products out there and have no repercussions. They are allowed to claim bankruptcy and people that brought suits against them never see any compensation. It's disgusting. The rich get richer and more evil and the common man dies. This is the result of unchecked greed.

The result of a reality TV generation
Revisado: 12-03-23
Part of me loved this book and other parts hated it. On the hatred side I was thinking before I finished the book that it could all be summed up in two words "disgustingly vapid." But, as she finished she tied it all up nicely and it made me appreciate the book and I am glad I did not stop listening the 10 or 15 times I felt I was wasting time I would never get back.
On the respect and love side I am glad she was able to escape the cult of the LDS church. As a former member myself I do understand the courage it takes to do so. She was more fully immersed than I ever was so I imagine it would have been even more difficult for her. So, kudos to her for realizing she is not a second class citizen born to serve and be obedient. It's ironic that she found herself by participating on a reality TV show as people usually lose themselves.
The beginning through the middle of the book were hard for me to listen to as it seemed the reality TV show generation seems to think every facet, second and topic is of the utmost interest to the audience. Like the sun rises and sets around their every move. Unfortunately, with a camera on you all the time, I imagine it must feel that way.
But, after completing the book I feel that she painted a complete picture of what her life was like before and up to her great awakening. And maybe that was necessary for the reader to fully feel and comprehend the enormity of her awakening. For most of the book I was disliking this woman immensely, but by the end I found myself respecting her and her experience and her courage for not falling into a fetal position and giving up. Especially when one has been groomed to be pampered and taken care of rather than have a voice, life or career of their own. She thrived inspite of all she ever learned would be her life if she did not tow the party line so to speak.
I hope other people will be able to learn from her experience and learn to think for themselves and choose lives they desire rather than ones that are chosen for them. I really wanted to say the totality of this woman was just Vapid. I feel her earlier life could certainly be described as that, but what she has endured and overcome certainly can no longer be considered vapid as there is great wisdom that was related to the reader. She has become a person of substance with something interesting and valuable to say. I could have never predicted I would feel this way at the end of this book. I am glad I have learned to give things a chance as it would have been a shame for me to judge this author by my first impression. Good luck to the author in her future endeavors. I hope you are able to approach them with similar courage and to learn the true priorities in life from your approach to them as you have done here.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Best book I have read in a long while.
Revisado: 11-02-23
I have to say that I did not like the author before this book, but now I do and have great respect for him. I had seen several interviews in the previous years where he talked about not wearing deodorant. Because the interviews were so unoriginal I felt like the actor and person was as well. I was wrong, he is definitely original and his own man. I just finished listening to this book at one of the most difficult times of my life. I found it sincerely inspiring and helpful and I'm grateful for the author being willing to share himself so authentically. I learned a great deal about him, but even more importantly, about myself.

Cat's Cradle is Vonnegut's satirical commentary on modern man and his madness. Did not live up to the hype
Revisado: 03-24-23
I really did not like this book at all. It made me laugh a few times and it was well written. I cannot say the author is not a good writer. It just did not hold my interest. All these people from all walks of life said how good it was and I just don't get it. I probably will never purchase another book by this author. It reminds me of all the artsy films that win Oscars, but only a select and small segment of the artistic community really appreciate it while the rest of us are saying too artsy for me and I did not enjoy it and I was not entertained by it. If you are person that enjoys films of that ilk you will probably love this book. If you are like me and do not enjoy films like that then you probably will not like this book either. I have nothing against the author. I can see what he was doing with his dark humor, but it just was not for me. I wish it had been. I really wanted it to be. But, mostly I was bored throughout the book with the exception of a few parts that made me laugh. That is not a successful investment in my opinion.

To lie or not to lie?
Revisado: 01-23-23
I am so glad Harry chose the option of not lying and telling his truth. It was amazing the things he has gone through. I phrase it as he has gone through a reckoning. He survived the raging storms that wanted to destroy him and came out victorious on the other side. No matter who a person is I have great respect for anyone that can do that.
He has become a great man. I see his mothers loving, kind grace in him throughout this book shaping him into the man he has become. Thank God for her. Without her influence in his life that reckoning may have destroyed him. It certainly came close.
This book makes me feel sorry for his brother who is solidly stuck in such a toxic system. Harry has certainly identified the toxicity of paparazzi. They have chosen the option of lying for ratings and for being financially compensated for creating those ratings. They were the original click bait before click bait was a thing. You can't call them reporters or correspondents as that would imply that they should have some ethics that require them to hold close to the truth. Sadly that is no longer the case for the profession in general. The paparazzi can best be characterized as opportunists that will scavenge on anything just to survive.
Very sad that a minor in the eyes of the law could be subjected to such cruelty by these scavengers. It's not enough that a 12 year old boy lost his mother, largely with these scavengers having responsibility in her death, they were allowed to victimize this poor boy. That should be illegal with severe consequences. The fact that the royal family refused to protect him from this says a lot about how toxic and stuck they are in this horrible system. He was allowed to be fed upon by the wolves. Unfortunately probably an experience they all view as normal, but it is not healthy or loving. And sadly with family like that who needs enemies? What an abysmal adversarial existence.
I thought this was a great book full of tragedy, character building, survival and a sincere truth that I found courageous. Harry has definitely painted a good picture of what he has experienced that contributed to the man he has become. He was a great narrator as well and was very natural. I don't know if he had help writing this book or if he did it himself. But, tying it all up with the last few sentences the way it did was simply beautiful. The metaphor, the imagery. Simply beautiful. I absolutely loved this book.
