I had HEARD about this book and the story, but I wasn't prepared for how GOOD this book was! The characters are SO vivid, the story is compelling, and the twist(s) and finale are shocking and unexpected. Just loved it!! My only regret is that the MOVIE version of this book won't live up to the books high standards! :(

First off, Cary Elwes is a fantastic reader! The stories he tells, behind the scenes, and the backstories are all fascinating and insightful. That being said, there is waaaaaaaaay too stroking of each others ego! Everybody gushes about everyone else (especially Robin Wright!!) to the point of nausea. GEEZ, okay! I get it, you guys liked each other! Just ONCE I'd like to hear some animosity, acting rivalry, or just plain hatred for someone!

If you downloaded this audiobook thinking it's all about the making of the movie (like I did), you'll be disappointed. In fact, the book doesn't even start talking about the actual movie until around Chapter 18! The entire first chapters are filled with biography's of John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, and John Landis. There are long chapters devoted solely to Belushi's meteoric rise to fame in the improv world, his crippling addiction to drugs, his girlfriend(s), and his SNL days with Ackroyd who created the Blues Brothers persona. Once this is over, FINALLY the book gives us the behind-the-scenes account of the movie in detail, which is pretty cool stuff. The reader sound like he smoked too many cigarettes, but is generally okay to listen to. Many of the stories in the book I've heard before; many I haven't, still it was worth the download & listen.
Note: for all the detail this book has (and it has alot!), the final chapter doesn't mention anything--not a second word--about Belushi signing on to do "Atuk", the infamous "cursed script" in 1982. Any actor that accepted the lead role died right after (Belushi, Sam Kinison, John Candy, Chris Farley, and Phil Hartman). Why this was never mentioned is baffling.

Okay, so the first chapter is an overview of Siskel & Ebert, the stuff you can hear on any TV doc. Chapter 2 is all about Ebert, Chapter 3 is all about Siskel, then by Chapter 4 it's how they got together. Yawn 🥱 not exactly thrilling information; barely held my interest.

I've been listening to audiobooks for quite a long time now, but I've never heard production values like this before!! Sound effects, background noises, music, and more!? Wow! They made this story pop and come alive more than any other audiobook I've ever heard before! I know many others found it distracting, but not me! I loved it!! It was almost like listening to a movie recording! My only beef was with the actual story and the introduction of Jedi Master C'baoth. He's supposed to be this big, bad Master Jedi that looms large over Grand Admiral Thrawn.....yet....his character all but disappears half-way in the book! They'll occasionally mention him, but he is totally forgotten until he pops up again in Chapter One of the second (sequel) book! WTH?! I really wanted him to show up and cause problems, but....nope! Nothing! Well, we'll see what happens in Book Two!

I've listened to about 15 of the Monterey Soundworks audiobooks and this one is the worst. Bad acting, bad voice work. a poor adaptation of the story, and not worth it.

I listened to this audio book start to finish and, while I can say it's a great insight to his personal life, I was struck with how much the man was in denial about all his endeavors that didn't work! Example: for his movies that flopped at the box office ("Silent Movie", "Life Stinks", "Solarbabies") he blissfully passes-over about that, instead saying how great they were! In fact, everything he does is great! Fantastic! Incredible! The man loves to praise himself and all his friends to the point were it gets eye-rolling. Like that guy at a party that won't shut up about an award he won and how HE saved the show by what HE did! LOL! He oh-so-briefly touches on how his "Young Frankenstein--the musical" wasn't the smash he wanted, but instead talks about how great it was after some rewrites!! Humility, they named isn't Mel Brooks!
