Anthony Hope nailed it back in 1897 when he wrote this book. The cast is varied, and, for the most part, believable. Black Michael (one of the main bad guys) was rather flat. Conclusion was surprising, not bad, good in fact, definitely not what I expected. The first half has mainly intrigue and strategy and a few gunfights, but in the second half, once they journey to Zenda sword fights and heroics abound. Andrew Pugsley was a good choice for narrator; I haven't heard him in anything else, but he did pretty well, although Colonel Sapt sounded like a pirate. Antoinette's voice was rather far-fetched, even exempting that she is a French character; and her exclamations don't have enough punch. Rupert of Hentzau was marvelously done, jeering and cocky, just like he should sound. The main character's romance with Princess Flavia occupies an important part of the story, and while nothing especially graphic takes place, concerned parents should check ahead on chapter eleven. That's pretty much the worst it gets, from then on it's pretty much ok, exempting the violence.

Howard Pyle is a wonderful author, and illustrator too. The first chapter is an extended article on piratical history, from the first grasping buccaneers to bloody scoundrels like Blackbeard. Most of the stories, though enjoyable, are short and occasionally predictable episodes. Fight and action scenes are phenomenal. Pirates are jolly and well-portrayed. The third or fourth story is actually an extract from a full-length novel of the same name, "Jack Ballister's fortunes" which explains why though the story has the name, the actual character of Jack does not appear. Beginning music is marvelous, brings the image of a heeling pirate ship with ominously fluttering black flag into mind.

I had read and enjoyed the count of monte cristo before getting and listening to this version. It is exactly what Orson Welles says in his introduction; “a humble, fifty-seven minutes worth”. The first half was accurate to a pinch, I especially enjoyed their portrayal of a ship coming in to port, and the rattle and roar of the chain at the cry of “let go the anchor!”
The second half, I can’t help but say, was too condensed. His revenge went way too quickly (he beat the three villains all at once instead of one at a time) and the element of personal redemption was left out entirely.
I know that they had to shrink it down, in order to make a pleasant afternoon’s listen, but they could have (if they really thought the story worth the time) made it into a multi-episode radio-series, like their production of “Les Miserables”.

Hugh Bonneville is my all-time favorite narrator. I laughed so hard listening to this one!
