Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Very poor audio production
Revisado: 04-18-24
This isn't my favorite Hamilton book, but it's still worth reading. Unfortunately, poor audio production or post-production absolutely ruins this audiobook. I cannot blame the narrator John Lee, since I have many of his other recordings of Hamilton and Reynolds books and he usually does a fantastic job, but the volume modulation on this is so bad it renders the book unlistenable. I have sensitive ears anyway, but it's not just me- these reviews are full of others complaining that phrases start out loud and trail off so much that it's either too loud or impossible to hear. And it's so frequent and pervasive that it's unavoidable. Honestly, how much would it have cost to fix this in post production?

Historia
"We have all been more or less to blame... every one of us, excepting Fanny." Taken from the poverty of her parents' home, Fanny Price is brought up with her rich cousins at Mansfield Park, acutely aware of her humble rank and with only her cousin Edmund as an ally. When Fanny's uncle is absent in Antigua, Mary Crawford and her brother Henry arrive in the neighbourhood, bringing with them London glamour and a reckless taste for flirtation. As her female cousins vie for Henry's attention, and even Edmund falls for Mary's dazzling charms, only Fanny remains doubtful about the Crawfords' influence and finds herself more isolated than ever.

Very good reading of my least favorite Austen
Revisado: 05-12-19
Note to Audible and those who like this narrator and would like to read more by her: Audible incorrectly lists this narrator as Sinead Dixon. Nope! (Just listen some of the other Sinead Dixon samples if you doubt me.) This is actually a public domain librivox reading by Karen Savage, who has also read S&S and P&P for librivox. So if you like her and want more, this one and her others are available on YT and the LV site, since they are public domain.

In this adventure from the pen of Sweden's master of crime and mystery, a disillusioned Inspector Kurt Wallander is thrown back into the fray when he becomes both hunter and hunted. Possibly my favorite of the Wallander series
Revisado: 04-02-19
Ever the cheapskate, I picked a few of the longer Dick Hill narrated Wallander books to listen to before this one-- more hours per credit. 17 vs 12 hours? easy call. But I just finished listening to this and think it might just be one of my favorites. Henning Mankell's writing is especially sensitive in this book, and if possible Dick Hill does an even better job than usual with the narration. This one is a real gem.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

My three stars across the board are not "meh" but according to Audible's rating system, "good" rather than "great." Nice little true crime story, well told and well narrated.

Not for me I guess
Revisado: 03-31-19
This was on sale, had glowing reviews and sounded like it might be wonderful story. Scattered among the five star reviews were a few 2 star reviews criticizing the surplus of unimaginative similes. I have to agree. Frankly I don't know how the writer managed to cram so many tired similes into a single paragraph. There was just no getting away from them and nothing about the writing or the story to make me want to grit my teeth and try to ignore them. Since this is the only one star review I've seen, I don't know if Amazon will allow me to post it, but I'm going to try. After all, the one star rating is supposedly "not for me."

Dick Hill reading the NASB, my dream audiobook
Revisado: 03-31-19
So, I've been enjoying Dick Hill's reading of Mankell Henning's Wallander series and have thought a few times, I wonder if this man would consider reading the Bible? His reading is beautiful, well-paced, and expressive without being overdone; just perfect in my opinion. Furthermore, I'd been unable to find an audio Bible reading I really enjoyed. Max McLean is too overdone for my liking, and a bit too James-Earl-Jones-ish, and just about ALL Bible readings I've come across are just too doggone fast. I do prefer a slower pace. Give me some space in between the words and let the story sink in. Of all the books in the world, the Bible is the one which should NOT be hurried, yet most audio recordings run, IIRC, 69-72 hours-- way too fast for me. The one I've used the most until finding this one was the free downloadable, fully indexed reading of the KJV by Dan Wagner. His narration was slower than some, and not overly dramatic, no icky music, and fully indexed and easy to download and navigate. His voice is a bit monotonous, but i do prefer that to overacted.
But, lo and behold, I searched Audible Dick Hill titles, and he HAS done a Bible reading, and not just any translation, but the NASB-- an excellent one. At 89 hours, Dick Hill's pace is PERFECT! And as always, his reading is beautiful. I find myself being drawn into the story in a way I never have been with any other audio Bible. THANK YOU, Dick Hill, and THANK YOU Audible! My only complaint is the relative lack of indexing. For me, this is not such a big deal as I prefer to listen on my laptop using the cloud reader, and in the lower left hand corner is a "chapters" icon that if clicked on, brings up a page with different numbers to click on. The "chapters" are unlabeled, but bookmarks can be added and I will be doing that. (Book of John begins at 224.)
Still, this is such a beautiful reading and the lack of indexing is such a glaring fault-- and I would assume a rather easy thing to remedy-- that, Hello, Audible, are you paying attention to these reviews? Why don't you index this beaut? That's the only reason for my four stars overall. It's a crying shame but even without it I highly recommend this as THE BEST audio Bible out there.
Sidebar: while searching Dick HIll's titles, I noticed he's written and read a Christian book of his own called "A Glimpse of the Christian." I'm excited about reading that one soon. I should have known my favorite narrator would be a Christian himself. :)

The book itself needs no accolades. This narrator is excellent and I've a hard time believing any of the pricier versions would be any better. For only $2.49 an unbeatable value for an audiobook.

Unfortunate narration
Revisado: 02-19-19
The other reviewers saying the narration is bad are correct. I labored all the way through part I before becoming frustrated by the arbitrary pauses and inflection. The reading is in fact so poor that I found it very difficult to follow the story, one i read many years ago and loved. Finally i gave up and downloaded the version narrated by Mark Nelson. What an improvement! I began at the beginning-- again-- and am astonished at the wonderful difference. For a mere $1.80 more, the very good Mark Nelson version is a fantastic value.
