Historia
Shortlisted for the 2011 Costa First Novel Award. Winner of the Authors' Club Best First Novel Award. Forty years in the future. The once-great city of Bohane on the west coast of Ireland is on its knees, infested by vice and split along tribal lines. There are the posh parts of town, but it is in the slums and backstreets of Smoketown, the tower blocks of the Northside Rises and the eerie bogs of Big Nothin' that the city really lives.

The Irish Cormac McCarthy has risen
Revisado: 11-18-23
Good heavens the language of this black-hearted book is spectacular. Ornate. Mysterious. Downright runic. A terrifying thrill ride through the collapse of humanity as a sentient species. Best thing I’ve read this year.

Historia
Sasha Chapin is a victim of chess. Like countless amateurs before him - Albert Einstein, Humphrey Bogart, Marcel Duchamp - the game has consumed his life and his mind. First captivated by it as a member of his high school chess club, his passion was rekindled during an accidental encounter with chess hustlers on the streets of Kathmandu. In its aftermath, he forgot how to care about anything else. He played at all hours, for weeks at a time. Like a spurned lover, he tried to move on, but he found the game more seductive the more he resisted it.

Puzzling Out Meaning
Revisado: 02-24-23
Chapin tells a charmingly self-deprecating story of his own life and search for meaning in a game. Funny and ultimately deeply illuminating. So glad I picked up this unlikely surprise of a book - I don’t even play chess.

Historia
Mister Monkey - a screwball children's musical about a playfully larcenous pet chimpanzee - is the kind of family favorite that survives far past its prime. Margot, who plays the chimp's lawyer, knows the production is dreadful and bemoans the failure of her acting career. She's settled into the drudgery of playing a humiliating part - until the day she receives a mysterious letter from an anonymous admirer and later, in the middle of a performance, has a shocking encounter with Adam, the 12-year-old who plays the title role.

Took me by surprise
Revisado: 06-01-17
Much more depth to this book than I expected. Really liked it, liked all the well-drawn characters and the way they were woven together. Plus, I especially loved the exploration of what it means to be a monkey! Big plus for all the (admittedly random) references to Russian literature. I mean, wha????

Spellbinding performance, profoundly complex story
Revisado: 08-09-16
Firstly, I loved the performance of the reader. In concert with the rich depiction of such a foreign time and place, I was truly and wholly transported.
I do understand that the author was aiming for telling the tale on a variety of levels. Some of those levels will be forever obscure to me, and that is my fault, not the author's. Some plot points, however, have been obfuscated so completely, that I find myself, at the conclusion of the book, thinking "ok. Wait. What?" I guess I'll have to take the blame for that too; but if the plot is lost, and I have to consider re-listening to a book that took me 30 hours, I'm sorry to say that probably won't happen, and I may never know everything the author wanted me to know.

Sprawling Epic
Revisado: 07-07-16
Took me forty years to get around to it, but I've finally checked Lonesome Dove off my bucket list. What can I say about it that hasn't been said? I'll let better critics discuss the book's merits and cultural value.
Lee Horsley's performance was great (except for maybe his regrettable attempts at doing an Irish accent!). The production values here are the only flaw. Poorly recorded and and produced. Audio levels all over the place, different mics clearly, no pauses between chapters. Oh well. A giant of a story like this made it all forgivable.

Good adventure but a little thin on logic
Revisado: 05-17-16
Enjoyed this book. It was recommended by a friend. There are some gaps and logic, not worth discussing here as they would be spoilers.

Historia
You were on your way home when you died. It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me. And that’s when you met me." A short story about the universe.

meh. I'ts like 8 minutes long. Touchy feely thing about how great humans are. Not buying it.
