It didn't have to end this way...but it did.
Revisado: 01-10-22
A jumbled up mess that tries to justify its existence, but in the end, gives up its life-force for a lack luster 'happy' ending.

Historia
Whistling Tor is a place of secrets: a mysterious, wooded hill housing the crumbling fortress belonging to Anluan - a chieftain whose name is spoken throughout the region in tones of revulsion and bitterness. A curse lies over Anluan's family and his people, and the woods themselves hold a perilous force whose every whisper threatens doom. Then the young scribe Caitrin appears in Anluan's garden, admiring the rare plant known as heart's blood. Retained to sort through entangled family documents, Caitrin brings about unexpected changes.

Very engrossing
Revisado: 01-22-19
The narrator didn't sound whiny to me, but I did slow down the reading speed because it seemed very fast. After I did that, I had no problems with it. I've never had to do that before.
Story wise, I really enjoyed it. Villian was a little obvious, but I loved the story idea so much it didn't matter. The author always does a good job with strong female leads that don't need to tear down men to raise themselves up. This is no exception. They're realistic people facing fantastical problems.

One of Heyer's best
Revisado: 03-06-18
While not as fun and fancy free as her other similar works, it is by far the most realistic of the times. It maintains the pleasent culmination of all going amazingly well for the protagonists that Heyer is loved for, but she allows her charaters to face disappointments many others
never had to (at least not for very long). This not only lends to the realism of the work, but also their relatability. It is a sweet tale that is best described by a lyric from the Rolling Stones, "you can't always get what you, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need."

Amazing story, narration not so much.
Revisado: 05-08-16
I wish the narrator had a larger range in his character voices. All the women sound the same, and most of the men as well. This kind of story really needed a reader with a wide range of accents and tones. He simply didn't give this kind of story the scope it deserves.
