What disappointed you about Chocolate Islands?

The book was not a travelogue, nor was there any character development. It summarized thumb nail skecthes of the main character's visits to various cocoa plantations. The descriptions of the various plantations focused on production rates and census numbers. Never got a sense of the main character. Never got any detailed description of any of the other characters who crossed his path. His letters back to the Cadbury brothers seemed far from inditements of what was occurring, yet somehow the Cadbury brothers read them as such- not sure if the damning language was excerpted or if it was so understated I missed it. The story did not flow. Many of the characters appeared only briefly. It offered no sense of the place or the people.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

This was an academic paper read aloud. It would interest a very small handful of scholars who already had knowledge of the story and were concerned with minute details of plantation production.
