I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

You have to have read/listened to the previous books in this series before reading/listening to this story.

I absolutely adore Charlie, he's one of my favorite characters from this series. It's clear how much Charlie cares about others, especially his pride members. Knowing as much as we do about the Magi compounds, and how Ash came to live at the pride house, I'm not surprised by Ash's struggle to trust. I love how patient Charlie was with Ash and seeing Ash grow to trust Charlie. Ash and Charlie really are adorable together! We also get to see the pride from a different perspective. This is a great holiday edition to the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Review Copy of this book.

This part of the review is specific to the audiobook version (see below for the story review):
I thought Michael Dean did a really good job with this story. There was enough variation to the characters to make it easy to follow. The pacing was good and and the narrator has a nice even flow.

Below is my review for the book:
Devon and Kimball were great together. The banter between them was great and we get a chance to see them build a connection in this book. The arson plot was okay, but the romance is really the highlight of this book. I could understand why both of them had some issues with relationships, but I think it made the connection between them even better. It was the little moments between them that really showed the bond (really want to try those pineapple waffles!).

Devon's sister, Birdy, is amazing. Not only is she a great deputy (more based on the other books, but I still stand by it), but she manages to wrangle he overly stubborn big brother. I also really liked Foster (looking forward to his book!). I also getting to see some of the characters from previous stories, a great chance to catch up (even just a bit) with some favorites.

*I think this book is better if you've read the previous books and the Veiled Intentions series for the background and secondary characters, but it isn't required.

The world-building was certainly here for this book. I really liked the black market and the way magic is both part of and separate from the normal world. I do think there is room for the world-building to keep growing and developing in future books, but there is a really good basis in this book. I think Jackson (as the story is told from his POV) is much more developed as a character than the others, maybe because we only see them through his eyes we're missing a bit of the why in their actions. I'm hoping we'll get to delve deeper in Xander's story as the books progress.

I wasn't a huge fan of the way Jackson would sort of addressed the audience in the story, a few times can be almost amusing, but it just seemed excessive in the story (and a little distracting). I'm thinking part of my issue with so much of the story being in Jackson's head is the narration, it was sometimes hard to tell if this was something Jackson was saying or just thinking (I may have done better with a print version).

The mystery was okay, interesting enough to keep the plot moving. I wasn't a fan of how SEER was portrayed in the story. On the one hand we're told they handle everything, normally without help. Then we see how they jump to conclusions and are basically acting like bullies in the story. The one SEER agent we see a lot of is excessively arrogant that he almost felt like a caricature. I'm sure we'll see more of SEER in the future books, but I'm hoping with a bit more depth.

*I have read/listened to some other books by this author so I had some background (primarily from the Veiled Intentions series), but I have not read all of the previous stories. While I highly recommend at the very least the three main books in the Veiled Intentions series (since that introduces both Shay and Ryder), I think it read okay without some of the others.

I liked the little chats between Shay and Ryder at the beginning of each chapter, it was a fun way to get some bonding between them in without bogging down the story. But I will say for the first few chapters I was rather confused by the way it comes across in the audio. I happened to read a review that mentioned them and it made so much more sense.

I could understand Shay's concern over the age-gap with Ryder, 15 years can seem like a lot. But I think Ryder is a mature enough character that the age-gap isn't really an issue once they start figuring things out. Ryder's determination to get past Shay's wall could have come across as too pushy, but it was actually rather adorable in the story. I thought the mystery was good, plenty of twists and turns to keep it from being completely predictable and enough action to keep the story moving. I liked getting to see some secondary characters that I've gotten to know in other books as well.

The concept of this book was good. I did like the characters. But the story just seemed so drawn out I was loosing interest part of the way through.

There are a few different groups woven together here. The mermen have been under the control of the Sea King for a long time. The Sea King keeps them hidden, but at a steep price. Jack (aka Seafoam) is a rebellious little brat. Though he knows he must give himself to the Sea King or risk his father and brother, he keeps sneaking off to dry land to live a little before his sacrifice. Peter is a dragon that can't shift because he never found his hoard.

I liked Jack and Peter. They were cute together. I'm not sure the Daddy/Boy element worked for me, in part because I think there were still too many communication/language issues for Jack to really understand. There were a lot of characters introduced in this book, and while I'm guessing that some of them will have their own books later, but it made the ending feel a little too incomplete.

These stories are best enjoyed if you view them as an alternate-universe. The stories are good, but there needs to be a certain suspension of disbelief to really enjoy them.

Thorn in His Side
The Beauty and the Beast retelling was good, though I think some elements felt a little forced to make them work with the fairy-tale. I felt so bad for Darius: an abusive father that controlled his life, the loss of his mother, the tragedy that ended his military service. Joshua took a little while to uncover the heart that Darius kept hidden, but I thought when they finally came together it was rather sweet. I do think this might have worked just a bit better in more of a historical setting, but I did enjoy the story.

A Right Royal Affair
Theo and James are from such different backgrounds. I thought this was a sweet Cinderella story (and not just because it's one of my favorite fairytales). I loved the Yorkies (each with their own personalities). I did think a few elements were a bit too easy at times (but isn't that how fairytales work). I thought James's sister was really sweet, it was clear how close they were. I also thought the castle staff were more friends than staff for James, it made him a bit more human.

I had not read the first book in the series before listening to this one. I didn't feel lost, but I do think it would have been a little bit better if I had.

I could completely understand why Silas isn't interested in a fated mate. After what he saw as a child, that would give anyone some lingering issues. Daniel was so patient. Yes, he wants his mate, but he doesn't push too hard. He's not too domineering as an alpha, but still protective. Even for as short as this story is, there is a slow-burn feel to it. The narration had good pacing.

I thought the narrator did a good job of juggling having 3 main characters, they each had a distinct voice for me.

I will admit that the Daddy/boy kink is not really my thing, but I think it works better in this story than in the second book in the series. I felt bad for Ben, given how abandoned he felt both from being left as an egg and not getting any interest during Pebble Gifting season. I'm glad he got both Axel and Cyrano to show him how amazing he really is. Axel made one stupid mistake (and a perfectly justifiable one in my opinion) and got exiled from Anchorage and the only family he has left. Cyrano wants to be accepted for who he is, a mix of alpha and omega, and he's wanted Axel for a forever mate for years, not just a temporary mate as is more customary in polar bear culture. I liked how it really takes the three of them to balance, it didn't just feel like a couple with an extra person thrown in. I think the magic is interesting, and we get a bit more explanation in this book than in previous books.

I know that Axel's brother Lu has his own book, but it felt weird to have bits and pieces weave into this story. I also thought the time jumps felt a little jarring at times. Also, I get the penguin nesting is very important, but I almost felt like Ben's pregnancy was viewed as more important than Cy's at that point. But overall, this was a solid piece to the series.

I really liked the narrator for this bundle. It was easy to tell who was "speaking" through out both books (especially important because the MCs from both books are important in both stories).

I really liked friendship between Lewis and Todd. They are sweet together and their relationship progressed in a way that makes it easy to see the love between them. Though there were still some serious communication issues as their relationship develops, but that makes sense as their cultures have some differences. I loved how seriously Todd took learning about penguin shifter culture, like the pebble ceremony.

Ansel and Daniel were a very different type of relationship. My heart had to ache for Daniel and what he went through with his Alpha. Ansel also has had his own issues with trying to find a relationship with someone who cares for him. The Daddy/boy kink isn't something that really appeals to me, and there was times where it felt a bit awkward between Ansel and Daniel. I'm glad they both got their HEA, but I did like the first story better.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Review Copy of this book.

Rory enjoys bartending at King's Gambit, but he knows the rumors about the owners past with ties to organized crime. King has tried to put his past behind him, putting his life into his Chicago club. Both men are running from their past, but if they're willing to focus on the present they might be able to have a future together.

There were some communication issues between these two that could be a bit exasperating at times, but I think once they started communicating they got each other. The chemistry between them was smoking. The secondary characters were well developed, I especially liked King's younger brother. There was a good bit of drama, but lots of steam and romance as well. I thought the story flowed well and kept me interested throughout. I also really liked the narrator, he kept a good pacing in the story.

I'm not sure I consider the ending a cliffhanger, but it is certainly a To Be Continued. It sets up for the next book in the series I'm assuming, and possibly reveal more of Rory's background.
