Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Amazing narrator
Revisado: 08-07-18
This book would be half as good without Bahni Turpin. The book’s strength is that it makes the hood seem so normal. It is especially powerful for teenage readers, who I hope will grow up to be more understanding adults.

I listen to this night after night
Revisado: 08-07-18
Have you ever rediscovered a book? This one resurfaced for me when I was worn out and overexcited—a losing combination—a couple of weeks ago. The soothing voice of Dr. Gurgevitch reminded me how helpful his healing meditation exercises had been for me years ago. They are helping me just as much today.

Historia
Girl moves to new town. Girl meets Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome. Cue Happily Ever After. That's how the story goes, right? Except this is Lucy. The same Lucy whose stellar driving skills single-handedly wiped out both of her parents, leaving her with nothing but the suitcase in her hand and the screws in her skull. Not to mention that Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome - AKA Oliver - is just as annoyingly bossy as he is hot.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did!
Any additional comments?
Death, love, regret and forgiveness: Jen Henderson’s *In the Middle* tackles some of the weightiest topics in life, through the eyes of teenagers. Intersecting planes of reality and the reiteration of lives bring the advanced narrative techniques of contemporary literature into the domain of Young Adult fiction. Love between man and woman, parent and child, across the racial divide and even that of animal and human, are occasions for Henderson’s delicate moral touch. There’s action, adventure and a sophisticated ending that leaves us wondering.

Historia
In seventh-century Britain, small kingdoms are merging, frequently and violently. A new religion is coming ashore; the old gods are struggling, their priests worrying. Hild is the king's youngest niece, and she has a glimmering mind and a natural, noble authority. She will become a fascinating woman and one of the pivotal figures of the Middle Ages: Saint Hilda of Whitby. But now she has only the powerful curiosity of a bright child, a will of adamant, and a way of seeing the world that can seem uncanny, even supernatural, to those around her.

The Dark Ages: as bad as you suspected
Revisado: 04-27-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I learned something about the every-day-ness of the cauldron of various factions, ethnic groups, religions and languages of the time; but it was just too long, and I gave up.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Something contemporary.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I sometimes heard the alliteration of early English poetry, which I appreciated.
Did Hild inspire you to do anything?
Have the strength to quit.
Any additional comments?
It's unfashionable to refer to the era as "The Dark Ages," but this novel convinced me that they were. Hack, slaughter, superstition . . .

Aftermath of 1956
Revisado: 04-01-17
The narration was so painful that I cannot believe I listened to it for seven hours. The narrator affected what was supposed to be a Hungarian Jewish accent, and which sounded like a mishmash of Eastern European accents, largely Czech. Toward the end of the book, it became clear that he cannot even pronounce French! Why did no one coach him? It would have been better to let him read in his own generalIy pleasant accent. The story was an odd assortment of historical details stirred into implausible episodes. The climax in the sewers of Paris was particularly egregious: the kind of thing that an author defends by exclaiming, "But it really happened!" The few metaphors stick out. I wanted to learn something about Hungary, but most of the book takes place after the family leaves. Why did I keep reading? I admire authors who record and shape for us their experience, particularly that of emigration; and for that, I thank Kertes.

Historia
Elegiac, bittersweet and profoundly moving, The Leopard chronicles the turbulent transformation of the Risorgimento, in the period of Italian Unification. The waning feudal authority of the elegant and stately Prince of Salina is pitted against the materialistic cunning of Don Calogero, in Tomasi's magnificently descriptive memorial to a dying age.

Possibly the best novel I ever read/listened to
Revisado: 01-05-15
Symbolic without being overwrought. Splendid characters, down to the prince's dog, who is resurrected at the very end as the symbol of the demise of the noble family. The down side of the unification of Italy, and the glory and despair of Sicily. A magnificent author, beautifully anchored by the sober voice of the narrator.

weeping with laughter
Revisado: 05-17-07
I am weeping with laughter listening to Robert Sutton get this off his chest. If only I had had his voice to walk me through Toxic Boss Hell! But then I might never have set out as an entrepreneur. Here's to the best of American business--and the funniest book I've encountered in any genre!
P.S. As one Ph.D. to another, Robert: I've already recommended your book to my husband, a German professor of German philosophy. We're checking ourselves for signs. Perhaps you could offer a wholesale rate to entire universities. Lest my address above lead you to suspect I mean my flawless alma mater, please note that I am writing from Munich.
