If you’re the kind of person who thinks that life happens to them and that there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation, then maybe, just MAYBE this one is for you. But even then, adequate solutions are few and far between.

It's too good to review and spoil the contents of the book. Plus the author gives personal insight at the end of each chapter.

Missed the Biggest Topic in All of Law

There is a debate in law about the interpretation of laws: should they be interpreted as written, or are they living, breathing documents? This becomes a big deal with the Constitution, because modern scholars debate about what the framers meant over 200 years ago.

Nowhere does this title mention this debate. Anywhere. But what they DO say is that law is living and breathing always, which is a big fallacy.

As a result, this entire title has a very liberal slant on the law. If our system actually worked like this, the United States would have converted to a communist/maxist state 70 years ago.

Misleading Book Title

Instead of the Art of Debate, this should have been called “Debate Team.” The author uses his own anecdotal experience as debate coach at wake forest, and as a result, he missed many key components of debate as an art.

For example: nowhere in the title does he mention emotion. Appeals to emotion, along with understanding how emotions affect an argument, are a huge key in success in this art. This fact is ignored.

He also contradicts himself often. In one case he mentioned that “statistics don’t argue,” but then later uses a statistic in climate change and concealed carry rights to draw a faulty conclusion.

There is a large left-leaning political slant on this title. Less of the “information” contained are actual debate strategies, and much more content delves into liberal talking points.

I gave this title 2 stars because there is SOME actual debate technique here that is relevant. But only 1-2 hours worth. It would have been a much better title had the political dogma been substituted with more comprehensive debate technique.

If you want to learn the art of debate, don’t use money or a credit on this title. The likelihood that you will be satisfied with your learning will be lack-luster.

Captivating tale of the old Pick Up Artist community of the early 2000’s. If you’re a man trying to work to build something in your life, you’ll appreciate this book.

Let’s be real here: when the CIA leaves a letter to a newly found-out KGB operative as a “lucrative offer to spy” for the United States, that’s not exactly what happened. More likely, the “lucrative offer” was actually a threat on the KGB officer and his family. The author glazes over little details like this in an effort to protect himself and the story. But make no mistake, the reader isn’t fooled. Nonetheless, this was a truly epic tale with first-rate insight.

I was kinda disappointed by this title for 3 reasons:
1) Very difficult read/listen. The normal flow you come to expect from Greene just isn’t there.
2) The chapter on gender and human nature is counter to modern statistics and what we know about happiness among generations. Studies from authorities like Pew Research pretty much disprove his entire premise that happiness and performance in gender is fluid amongst the sexes. The example he uses is quite lacking also.
3) The author’s interpretation of Michael Eisner at Disney was quite lacking. This is very odd, since Greene is usually good at covering all the bases in his analyses. Here he missed an obvious point: the effect that the death of Eisner’s business partner had on his downfall at the film giant. The death of the key individual made it quite obvious that Eisner’s performance shift wasn’t due to mere “grandiosity.” As a result, key points on human nature were missed…
