Seemed a bit like Deus Ex Machina

I liked the books until this point, but seems a bit contrived to go grab a super team to handle the fight in here versus the group we’ve come to know.

Series spoilers ahead!

I know there is already Kaiju, genetically modified humans, aliens, giant robot and futuristic technology but bringing in inter-dimensional help seemed a bit of a stretch to finish this out. I think using the team we know to finish this would have been great.

Over the course of the series, I did like how the pre-Legion team was assembled over the course of the books but to introduce 4+ characters in this one to help fight was a disappointment. If not for that, I did like it.

I can see a series of spin-offs telling the backstories or ongoing stories of that super team that was introduced so maybe that was the plan all along.

Jack Jr is now Bourne mixed with an a**hole

My biggest issue with this story is that Jack Jr is becoming overtly aggressive and testosterone filled where he wants to fight everyone while taking on the world by himself.

The only purpose I can see is that it would make the story more exciting. However, it detracts from it instead since Jack does something stupid or stupidly hostile that puts him in a bad situation that could be avoided. He picks fights with people because he thinks he's a bad ass. He doesn't trust anyone, even though the story doesn't really give him a reason except for his own paranoia. Overall, makes it hard to root for Jack with his irresponsibility and violence-first approach. That may work for other characters in other books, but Jack is supposed to be intelligent and he has a solid background with good training. It's like someone spiked his coffee with 'roids and he goes on a mindless rage.

Also, the last big scene in the book is too over the top to be plausible. Between the whole concept of what they are trying to accomplish (seems very contrived to make it more exciting) and the fact that Jack Jr takes a licking better than any Timex.

On the plus side, Scott Brick does try to salvage the story with his performance.

If you liked the first one, you'll like this one! Love the narrator's attitude while reading even the chapter breaks.

What made the experience of listening to Star Wars: Heir to the Empire (20th Anniversary Edition) the most enjoyable?

Marc Thompson is fantastic especially intermixed with the Star Wars sound effects in the background. His accents and portrayals of the different main characters were great - I even like the fact that he kept Lando's pronunciation of Han's first name just like Billy Dee did it.

What did you like best about this story?

I had read this series when it first came out and it was great then and great now. Story-wise it is the direct sequel to the original Star Wars trilogy with the original cast of characters.

Which character – as performed by Marc Thompson – was your favorite?

Han Solo. He got the tone just like Harrison Ford - almost as if Mr. Ford did it himself.
