A Little Salty
Revisado: 11-23-23
Too much salt can ruin an otherwise great dish. Too much sarcasm can do the same to an otherwise great book, and this book come perilously close. The authors’ messages can also be hard to hear at times over the sound of their axes grinding against white Europeans. But worth the read, full of tantalizing historical nuggets and interesting reinterpretations. Valuable.

Historia
The world has changed. Now, when someone is murdered, they almost always come back to life—and there are professionals, called “dispatchers”, who kill in order to save lives, to give those near the end a second chance. Tony Valdez is a dispatcher, and he has never been busier. But for as much as the world has changed, some things have stayed the same. Greed, corruption, and avarice are still in full swing.

Best of Three Worlds
Revisado: 02-21-23
The Dispatcher series is immensely satisfying for three reasons. First, Scalzi is in top form. Second, Quinto voices it perfectly. And third…I am frankly in love with the 3-4 hour length of the pieces in this series. Long enough be satisfyingly detailed and fleshed out, yet short enough to eliminate long digressions, expositions, red herrings, dead-end subplots, and the other indulgences of novel-length writing. Short story/novella is the perfect form for audio book consumption, and Scalzi has mastered it. All meat, no filler.

A little gem
Revisado: 11-08-19
Consider spending the short time it takes to listen to this little gem. Light, unpretentious, direct and to the point, well balanced, with excellent, non-dogmatic illustrations of Buddhism’s main points. It fills without being filling. I’ve recommended lots of books to family and friends, but this one I’ll consider giving as a gift, because it seemed like a gift to me when I was done.

Historia
The idea that the world is an illusion that betrays its real origin has a long tradition and can be found in the writings of Hindu rishis, early Greek philosophers, and Christian Gnostics. What is perhaps surprising is to find such a rich literature on the subject in neuroscience and quantum physics. The latest, and perhaps most provocative, idea to gain some currency in varying scientific disciplines is the hypothesis that the universe is the result of a computational simulation....

Useful
Revisado: 02-27-16
What made the experience of listening to Is the Universe an App? the most enjoyable?
The Lanes put together an accessible and entertaining overview of current theories of consciousness.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
James Killavey, at least in this book, has one of the strangest reading cadences and end-sentence inflections I've ever heard. I put the chances at about 50/50 he's an AI.
Any additional comments?
One of the Lanes has an annoying preoccupation with a particular East Indian guru and a contemporary writer who espouses mystical dualism. A little of these two goes a long way, and they are used more than a little.
