Historia
Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

Why British Accents?
Revisado: 03-17-25
I tried, I really tried. But I could not figure out why, in a series based in the United States, all the characters had various European accents with the exception of a couple. I just couldn’t get my head around it. I probably listened to 15 minutes, try again listened for an hour, and then just had to hang it up unread.

Wait… what?
Revisado: 11-23-24
The story had huge potential… But lack in depths and continuity. I repeatedly found myself saying “wait… What? How did we get here? What happened to…?“. I also wasn’t wild about the narrator and her male voices. Overall, the story was good, but lacks the depth and development of other dragon books.

It's not just a thousand miles that separates Hanna Majewski from her younger sister, Stefa. There is another gulf—between the traditional Jewish ways that Hanna chose to leave behind in Warsaw, and her new, independent life in London. But as autumn of 1940 draws near, Germany begins a savage aerial bombing campaign in England, killing and displacing tens of thousands. Hanna, who narrowly escapes death, is recruited as a spy in an undercover operation that sends her back to her war-torn homeland.

It just… ended
Revisado: 11-12-24
This book was a little slow starting, but once the characters were all introduced, it held a good pace. Lots of interesting details and, from everything else I’ve read, well documented in fact. I was fully engaged until it just… Ended. Like the author just got tired and Decided OK, the major piece I wanted to tell is told and I don’t really know how to close this up so I’ll just stop here…

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Hatched up
Revisado: 08-15-24
Maybe I’m spoiled by the previous discovery of witches books, but this seemed choppy. Without smooth Segway and tangents that didn’t seem to connect to each other. I enjoyed the witchier side and learning more about Diana‘s side of the family, but there’s still far too many unanswered questions. In the beginning, she says there was no way she would let the congregation or the witches interview the twins, and yet… It happens. The entire book takes place over the course of just a couple months, trying to squash way too much information into such a compressed time. As usual, their narration was fantastic and spot on.

Fun, a bit predictable
Revisado: 07-12-24
Well, this is a familiar trope, but set in a unique location. Which adds a lot to the plot. The narration is decent, moving along with the excitement of the book. I picked it up for free, and I’m grateful I didn’t pay for it.good… But not great

1944. Physics professor Alfred Mendel and his family were trying to flee Paris when they were caught and forced onto a train, along with thousands of other Jewish families. At the other end of the long, torturous train ride, Alfred is separated from his family and sent to the men’s camp, where all of his belongings are tossed on a roaring fire. His books, his papers, his life’s work. The Nazis have no idea what they have just destroyed. And without that physical record, Alfred is one of only two people in the world with his particular knowledge. Knowledge that could start a war, or end it.

Gripping suspense, heart wrenching story
Revisado: 07-01-24
This book falls squarely in my favorite genre. But I’m usually reading stories about female spies or female heroes of World War II. This book… Wow! It had me in so much suspense that I literally had to put it down a few times just because it was so intense! The stories of the camp, as you might expect were heartbreaking, accurate, and appalling. The idea that someone might willingly enter a place like Auschwitz is absolutely mind-boggling. Still… It speaks of courage that I’m not sure exists these days. The story was absolutely gripping, kept me engaged the full time I was reading it and while I didn’t want to put it down, I literally had to put it down just for my own sanity.beautiful story

Historia
Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book's content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. Eating a map can help them remember destinations, and children, when they misbehave, are forced to eat dry, musty pages from dictionaries.

Vampires meet Handmaids
Revisado: 06-10-24
Totally new take on vampirism. I really enjoyed the action, adventure, and depth of the story. The characters were well thought out and crafted. I also liked the accent of the narrator, however, I felt like there could have been a little more voice inflection during times of adventure or battle. I definitely recommend this to friends and I am hopeful. There will be the possibility of a second book to find out what happens.

Lots of political intrigue, less magic, and action
Revisado: 06-04-24
I listened to all four books in the series, and I think it could all have been condensed into one very well told story. I enjoyed the characters, but some of their stories were repeated so many times I found it tedious. World building was reasonably good and the, deep dive into 1000 years of history was also interesting. Unfortunately, the narration was substandard. In the last final wizard battle, I don’t think the narrator even raised her voice to indicate that it was a stressful moment. It was reasonably good, but I’m glad it was free. Otherwise I think I would be returning it.

Honestly, I’m not a murder, mystery kind of gal, but I wanted to try something different in this book sounded interesting. Unfortunately, the readers voice was so flat, that it put me to sleep all the time. I really tried! But after three hours, I just couldn’t do it anymore and I returned the book unfinished
