This is my second time exploring Tehanu, and my first time listening to it rather than reading it. The narrator’s different pronunciation of certain names and places aside, Tehanu is the most masterfully crafted book of Earthsea. Its deviation from the traditional hero format, its poetic narration, and its truly relatable conflict held me in as much of a chokehold of wondrous attention this second time around as much as the first. If the author were still alive today, I would try and find a way to thank her every time this incredible novel crosses my mind.

Historia
Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth.

This book will break your heart and then repair it
Revisado: 09-15-24
I tend to hate sequels to perfectly wonderful and seemingly stand-alone novels, but if a perfect sequel has ever existed, it is this book. TJ Klune made me laugh, cry, and squeal with joy. He truly is the anti-JK Rowling, and his beautiful stories make me want to be a better writer, a better ally, and a better person.
To the author: thank you, thank you, thank you for all the light your writing has brought to my life.

The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls. And now the impossible dream has come true. I’m out, we’re all out. We saved everyone. So much for my great-grandmother’s prophecy of doom and destruction. Ha, only joking! Actually, it’s gone all wrong.

A Tidy Conclusion
Revisado: 06-17-24
While I feel this book suffers from the YA third book in a trilogy condition of the story feels stretched beyond its limits, I was satisfied with the ending and, overall, enjoyed the series.

Asimov’s Relevance Holds Strong
Revisado: 04-09-24
Over half a century since this book was written, and it holds fast to its relevancy and influence despite the progression of the world it was written for. There are clear signs of the time in which it was written, but even they are not as jarring or atrocious as other works of the same decade. Asimov wrote with a compelling and intellectual hand, and his passion for the galaxy he envisioned is as clear as the messages he conveyed in his prose.

With nothing left to lose, he returns to his family's summer cabin outside the small mountain town of Roseland, Oregon, to try and find some sense of direction. The cabin should be empty. It's not. Yet Another Pure Delight
Revisado: 09-27-23
While not nearly as subtle or implicit as some of Klune’s prior works, The Bones Beneath My Skin takes it’s place as another warm and delightful tale from the author’s beautiful mind. I loved the characters and the story, the narration and performance was excellent, and the story—well, predictable, but exciting and heartwarming none the less. If you enjoy his other books, The Bones Beneath My Skin will not disappoint.

What a Chilling Delight
Revisado: 12-16-22
From the narrative, to the overall composition, this analog style classic brought me the wondrous pain that comes when you fear for the safety of characters you truly love. I regret the years I missed not having this in my repertoire, since it is so wonderfully written and tells a story that is somehow familiar and yet refreshing. There’s so much to love about this book, from the character dynamics, to the variety in the narrative, to the author’s stunning command of the English language, of which he so expertly used to tell this dark tale of a battle between hood and evil. 10/10, highly recommend.

A Delight from Start to Finish
Revisado: 05-04-22
I can’t say that I’ve ever enjoyed a story more than House in the Cerulean Sea. Casual fantasy is so often overdone, most ironically, but this delightful book managed to be relatable to those caught in the monotony of a Monday to Friday life while being funny, compelling, and including magical creatures who exist in a world not too different from our own. While not a story for children (because of its complexity, not its content) I found my inner child was touched by the ease in which the author managed to build a world that I knew, while also having sprites, gnomes, shape-shifters, and all sort of other creatures that had captivated my imagination when I was younger. Not only were the story and characters a complete delight, but the overall writing and use of language helped to create a world that seemed so real, I felt as though I’d visited it myself. The performance was perfect, and I’m almost glad that I chose to listen to this story rather than read it on my own (I don’t think I would have managed to live Arthur nearly as much of not for the sweetness in which his character was read). I loved it. I loved it. I loved it.

A Touch Misleading
Revisado: 12-03-20
While Ms. Norman's command of the english language is noteworthy, her narration eloquent, and her experience useful, the book covers several chapters worth of unrelated material that could leave an anxious reader looking for answers wondering when we get to her about her uterus. I in no way want to undermine her traumatic childhood or the profound influence of certain people in her life, but stories like that are better suited for her memoirs and not this book. The few bits that are relevant could be summed up in a single paragraph, and her inability to stay on topic makes the whole book read as though she as an author is inexperienced, and perhaps did not have a component editor.
Despite this, her retelling of the struggles she has had with endometriosis are comforting, as someone who's struggling myself I find it affirming that she can describe so well what the pain is like. I only wish she talked more about her uterus, and less about her childhood.
