Historia
Sixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote, fed by his own delusional fantasies, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. At once humorous, romantic, and sad, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. This fresh edition, by award-winning translator Edith Grossman, brings the tale to life as never before.

Amazingly amusing translation and reading
Revisado: 01-13-25
This translation of Don Quixote is simply hilarious and a joy to read or listen to. Only reading it in Spanish would make it more fun, as Cervantes plays with Spanish words that cannot be easily translated. Don Quixote is one of the best books ever written (in my opinion the best) and I love all the little side stories that others criticize Cervantes for. They are as good as the main story and do not distract from it. The reading by Guidall is excellent and enjoyable, with his inflection of voice being spot on in accentuating the emotions of the characters. Don Quijote and this translation of it is already funny and fun, but Guidall makes it even better with his wonderful narration.

Historia
Trust. Betrayal. Revenge. The Count of Monte Cristo is the quintessential masterpiece of Alexandre Dumas. In Edmond Dantes we find an early materialization of the modern superhero. He is a dashing young sailor imprisoned unjustly for treason. While in prison he meets a holy man who imparts to him all his wisdom. The "abbe" also divulges the profound secret of a hidden treasure. Dantes realizes that with such immense wealth, one could wreak a hateful vengeance on one's enemies.

Amazing reading of an excellent novel
Revisado: 01-13-25
This is a beautiful reading by B.J. Harrison. He brings out the beauty of the book with a style, tone, and tempo that is pleasing to the ear and understandable. He does an excellent job in changing voices for the different characters.
The novel itself may be one of the greatest books ever written. You are almost always in suspense, not knowing what will happen next. Besides the main story, there are so many interesting side stories and relationships, that if made word for word into a TV series, all other series would pale in comparison. This book has the intrigue, adventure, mystery, and romance that should suit anyone. Besides my wife and I who listened to this audio book, my thirteen and 17 year old sons and 15 year old daughter thought it was excellent, though they read it. It is long, but never drags, because even parts of it that seem to be apart from the story actually have components that turn out to matter greatly in understanding the plot.

Excellent reading by Simon Vance
Revisado: 01-13-25
Simon Vance is one of the best narrators of audiobooks. After listening to his amazing rendition of the Tale of Two Cities, I jumped at the possibility of listening to his rendition of the Three Musketeers, and he did not disappoint. His melodious, soothing voice is by itself a pleasure to listen to, even though he is not as good as some narrators in making obvious distinctions between characters, often inserting different English accents when distinguishing between characters. though they were mostly French. Yet his tempo, tone, clarity, dictionary make the reader understand every word and enjoy every part of the book, even when the text itself is not the most interesting.
The amazing Dumas novel, the Count of Monte Cristo, is one of the best novels ever written. Therefore, I expected a similar masterpiece from the Three Musketeers, but I was a little disappointed. The novel is not a bad read, and has an excellent final third, but overall the characters, unlike in Monte Cristo, are rather shallow and the four Musketeers are often annoying and not really sympathetic, nor amusing. If the main villain was not so utterly evil, one would wonder if the four musketeers were the most villainous characters in the book. Their exploits made it seem like they could do whatever they wanted, good or bad, like a bunch of spoiled, arrogant frat boys

Excellent book, horrible lector
Revisado: 10-31-24
Simon Callow may be a famous actor, but his reading of this Dickens classic is horrible. I really could not enjoy the book with this reading. In fact, when Callow mimicked the voices of some of the characters, there was so much screeching that my ears hurt. I therefore had to purchase another audiobook for the sake of my ears. Simon Vance's rendition, the Tantor one, and then I could enjoy the book with Vance's beautiful, melodic voice. The novel itself rather drags for 2/3rds of the story, but then is extremely exciting, like an action movie. Dickens' book is beautifully Christian, but more of a no need for an institutional Church type of way. It is in some ways an anti-French novel with brutal snippets of anti-Catholic propaganda, showing pre-revolutionary France as the worse place one could ever live in in history, except for one place worse--revolutionary France. The English have a bunch of rude simpletons in the novel, but nothing in comparison to the brutes living in France, in every class. So if you don't mind Dickens' Anglo-Saxon superiority complex, you will enjoy the book more. It is a good novel to read, but make sure you understand that it is not historically accurate.

Typhoon is the story of a steamship and her crew beset by a tempest and of the captain whose dogged courage is tested to the limit. Captain MacWhirr was an ordinary man. However, when his steamer Nan-Shan blunders into a hurricane, he and his crew must pull together to survive. The steadfast courage of an undemonstrative captain and the imaginative readiness of his young first mate becomes a partnership vital to human survival as they are challenged from without by the elements, and from within by human doubts and fears.

G. K. Chesterton's classic biography of St. Francis. Visit ChestertonBooks.com to see other books in our G. K. Chesterton series. "St. Francis was above all things a great giver; and he cared chiefly for the best kind of giving which is called thanksgiving.... He knew that the praise of God stands on its strongest ground when it stands on nothing. He knew that we can best measure the towering miracle of the mere fact of existence if we realize that but for some strange mercy we should not even exist...." - G. K. Chesterton

Wonderful book, but not a biography.
Revisado: 05-17-23
G.K. Chesterton is one of the greatest writers in history and probably the best social commentator of the 20th century. He did not write a biography of St. Francis, but a commentary on his life. It is best to read a shorter or longer biography of St. Francis (like the one by St. Bonaventure) and then listen to this audiobook. Then you will understand the saint well. The reading is good, though for some reason the reader ommits or adds a few words, meaning he is 99% accurate, but if you followed it reading the book you would notice one to three word omissions or additions here or there which can be annoying if you are strict like I am.

In December of 1938, a chemist in a German laboratory made a shocking discovery: When placed next to radioactive material, a Uranium atom split in two. That simple discovery launched a scientific race that spanned three continents. In Great Britain and the United States, Soviet spies worked their way into the scientific community; in Norway, a commando force slipped behind enemy lines to attack German heavy-water manufacturing; and deep in the desert, one brilliant group of scientists was hidden away at a remote site at Los Alamos.
