If you really want to change your life...
Revisado: 02-21-23
The book opens with two compelling stories of implementing habits that produced fantastic results. As the book progresses, the author addresses methods for making life improvements through effective habits. After all, what is a life about? His methods are simple but address why we drop certain habits or how to make a habit easier or more likely to produce real change.
I would recommend this book to anyone seeking a better life.

A blueprint. A bible. What Sun Tzu’s Art of War was to ancient China, Pimp is to the streets. As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the tale—the dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for today’s Black community. By telling the story of one man’s struggles and triumphs in an underground world, Pimp shows us the game doesn’t change; it just has a different swagger.

Wonderfully informative, insightful and full of suspense but well written. Just a great read and you'll never look at prostitution or even high control situations in the same way.

Historia
Andrea Elliott follows eight dramatic years in the life of Dasani, a girl whose imagination is as soaring as the skyscrapers near her Brooklyn shelter. In this sweeping narrative, Elliott weaves the story of Dasani’s childhood with the history of her ancestors, tracing their passage from slavery to the Great Migration north. As Dasani comes of age, New York City’s homeless crisis has exploded, deepening the chasm between rich and poor. She must guide her siblings through a world riddled by hunger, violence, racism, drug addiction, and the threat of foster care.

Saga of a Poor Urban Family
Revisado: 01-15-22
Ugh. You don't wanna be poor. Elliot tracks a homeless family of 8 struggling to survive in New York City. The author follows the family for nearly a decade giving the reader a detailed account of daily life in trying to raise a family if you're homeless in urban America. I lwas given an insider's view of the welfare system or "safety net." I saw the influences of addiction but moreso the influence of a culture that leads to addiction and incarceration and perpetuates the poverty cycle. I was introduced to many of the players that make up the assistance culture which included teachers, lawyers, psychologists and government functionaries, some good and some not so good, some fantastically influential and some fully incompetent.
The book was very long and very detailed but not boring and well written and extremely educational. You'll never look at a homeless person in the same way and your understanding of "the system" will improve. I think it's a vital read for anyone wishing to help anyone.

What do you do when you're faced with a big decision? If you're like most people, you probably make a pro and con list, spend a lot of time obsessing about decisions that didn't work out, get caught in analysis paralysis, endlessly seek other people's opinions to find just that little bit of extra information that might make you sure, and finally go with your gut.

Annie Duke is just all out brilliant. The book gets an A+ for usability for anyone who has to make a decision or has made a decision. I could write on and on but I won't do it justice. Read it.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Great material, weakly used.
Revisado: 07-04-21
I was disappointed in Michael Lewis' attempt to give insight to the government's handling of the Pandemic. The book follows some of the epidemiologists who knew what had to be done but were frequently stimied by administrative weaknesses. The book will give the reader insight into how diseases are addressed by the government. You'll also gain a better understanding of the role of the CDC, the White House and how state health agencies interact. That was worth the price of the book. Unfortunately, the great stories of the book's key characters become lost in tedious side stories or backstories which should have been edited out. The roles of the White Houses were treated like minor supporting characters. Then again, perhaps I expected harsher treatment of the last administration in order to match my own observations. Instead, Lewis spent a great deal of time focussing on the ineptitude of a California health official I'd never heard of. It's fair to say, I missed the drive to turn pages but soldiered on gathering what information I could waiting for a clear indictment that never came.
