Another Masterpiece
Revisado: 01-05-25
Kay is a virtuoso at capturing the mood and the essence of an era, and this - the 3rd novel set in the Jaddian version of the Renaissance - unveils new facets that sparkle with narrative brilliance. Old friends and new appear on the stage, each compelling no matter how small or large their part.
Coupled with a superb performance by Simon Vance, this is a must-listen.

Historia
From the small coastal town of Senjan, notorious for its pirates, a young woman sets out to find vengeance for her lost family. That same spring, from the wealthy city-state of Seressa, famous for its canals and lagoon, come two very different people: a young artist traveling to the dangerous east to paint the grand khalif at his request - and possibly to do more - and a fiercely intelligent, angry woman posing as a doctor's wife but sent by Seressa as a spy.

I will confess that the beginning did not hook me as so many of Kay's books have - but a little patience paid off, as the characters and their journeys blossomed into a very satisfying listen.

Another Magnificent Moment in Time
Revisado: 12-02-24
GGK has perfected the ability to capture an age, an era, an epoch in time and present it to his audience in all its gory splendor through masterfully compelling characters, proven yet again here in this work. Every character that arrives on the stage of A Brightness Long Ago could carry a story as a protagonist or villain, so vividly made as they are. Each new step in the story drives home the mood of the age, the passions of its people, and the flavor of the stories appropriate to it.

Historia
The ruling Asharites of Al-Rassan have come from the desert sands, but over centuries, seduced by the sensuous pleasures of their new land, their stern piety has eroded. The Asharite empire has splintered into decadent city-states led by warring petty kings. King Almalik of Cartada is on the ascendancy, aided always by his friend and advisor, the notorious Ammar ibn Khairan - poet, diplomat, soldier - until a summer afternoon of savage brutality changes their relationship forever.

A Lyrical Wonder of A Dying World
Revisado: 10-08-24
This is one of the most beautiful and tragic works I've ever consumed. Kay is a master of evoking a world akin to Medieval Spain, yet distinct and strange. His characters, though perhaps beginning life as echoes of real figures, are glorious and moving in their own right. The action, the poetry, the people - all contribute to a magnificent tale worth the listen.

If Army Rangers Landed In Middle Earth
Revisado: 08-11-21
The delight this work kindled was a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. Anspach and Cole have done something I didn't think possible, nor knew that I needed: infused a Tolkien-esque fantasy setting (a future Earth, warped and twisted by magic/tech) with high-speed Special Operators gunning down orcs, facing dark hags, and crafty vampires.
Told by a linguistic attached to the Ranger Battalion, Talker, the story can be a little indulgent and self-refertial at times, but it flies by, from hard-hitting action, to the quiet moments. As the Rangers overcome and adapt to the world they've arrived in we see the hardiness, the confidence, and the camaraderie that epitomizes such forces...as well as their tics, their faults, and their losses.

An Outstanding Legacy
Revisado: 05-12-21
The second season of Galaxy's Edge starts off with a bang - several, in fact. Anspach and Cole pull no punches and bring the characteristic incredible action, great dialogue, and deep world building. Long time fans will be especially pleased with the threads that begin to come together in Legacies, as the authors prove once again masters at weaving complex narratives spanning multiple books, without it becoming overly complicated or unintelligible. A must-listen for fans of fun SF.

Following Vanera Fanning following the events of Sun of Suns, this sequel centers on the strange and insular nation of Spyre and the deadly games Vanera must play to escape. Everything magnificent and thrilling about book one is turned to 11, as Vanera and a band both motley and noble work together to stymie the dark plans of Sachris and keep the Key of Candesce out of dangerous hands.

For almost a hundred years, Hadrian Marlowe has served the empire in its war against the Cielcin, a vicious alien race bent on humanity's destruction. Rumors of a new king among the Cielcin have reached the imperial throne. This one is not like the others. It does not raid borderworld territories, preferring precise, strategic attacks on the humans' empire.

The Real Triple Threat
Revisado: 08-12-20
This work stands alone among a few that combine excellent, gripping narration standing atop a story worthy of it. Ruocchio and Roukin are a power house combo that is an aural delight. Building on the first two novels and the handful of short stories, Ruocchio manages to deliver a thrilling, moving, and stunning third installment that manages to top the heights of its predecessors.

A Timeless Masterpiece
Revisado: 08-02-20
After years of hearing about it, Hyperion proved to be everything I hoped it would. The setting is a fantastic and not too wild idea of our future, but it will s the characters who truly sing. Tragedy and hope, faith and pragmatic cynicism, and an unconquerable drive to go on live in the Pilgrims we meet in the road.
