I really enjoyed most of the books by this author that I've read so far. But this was not good! My main problem of the book is that Mallory is constantly hitting Simon. To the point where when he knows he's going to have to say something she isn't going to like he physically steps away from her because he doesn't want to get punched in the stomach or balls. But it's never even talked about how that's not okay for her to do! (well I did give up half an hour from the end because it was making me so mad.) I feel like men being abused isn't really talked about as much because people don't realize that men can be hurt by women but it's a thing. And it happens all the time. I feel like being raised in a time where women hitting men was just an acceptable thing to do definitely plays into it a lot. I know 10 years ago when I was in high school that that was how a lot of girls, including myself, flirted. Casually hitting someone is so cute and endearing, didn't you know?! (What was wrong with me??!!!) But for a book released in 2018 I wanted so much more. How is this still okay? I feel like also if you're going to make your character bisexual and then just have them end up with someone of the opposite gender, then that is just playing it so safe. Literally the only reason Mallory was bi was for plot reasons. It's the only thing that's keeping them apart is that he thinks she was lesbian. It's just so stupid and I hate it.

Our hero has so many sexist thoughts. (Women needing to be subservient and other bullshit like that.) Oh, and did I mention that he has conversation with his dick? Yup! You heard me right. Plural. As in at least 10. It was uncomfortable. He always telling it to shut up and behave. 😂 And the pacing was not good at all. It would be really slow and then bam! Something would happen that if practically miss. There were several scenes that were not very long and then when the characters were thinking or talking about it in retrospect they describe them as at least 2 or 3 times longer than they actually were. It completely threw me out of the story. I’ve never had this problem with MacKenzie’s writing before so I dunno what was up with that. 🤷‍♀️ It definitely needed some work though. It’s only the 2nd book that has ever driven me to turning my audiobook up to 3x speed and it was mostly from the wacky pacing. Also, her dad is a major dickwad. There is this big deal made about him being such a selfish jackass to his daughter but Ann never faces him about it and he just gets away with it! Both him and his bride to be. Shame on them for being selfish cowards and not having the guts to talk to Ann. And I’m so disappointed that it’s not brought up again. Ann just decided to be a complacent and spineless person and it made it feel so unsatisfying. She’s all like “YEAH! I’ll let them walk all over me. No problemo. Here, let me lie down to make it easier for you.” (Maybe a slight exaggeration...) Also, the children. Children are the literal worst in adult books. 99/100 times it’s done badly. The children are either wise beyond their years or act far too young. Somehow this author manages both in one book... how does that even happen? The 5 year old in particular really grated on my nerves. Which definitely wasn’t helped by the high pitched and fast speech that the narrator gave him but I do believe he would have been really abnoxious either way. I could keep going but let’s just say it wasn’t good. It’s more like a 1.5 star rating for me and the only reason it didn’t get 1 star is because I never cared about the story enough to be invested or mad. It was just bleh. 10/10 would not recommend. Try Loving Lord Ash by her if you want something actually good.

*1.5 STARS
This was a reread for me but I read it about 7 years ago so didn't really remember anything about it besides the basic plot. And boy did I not really like it this time!! The first book in the series is a Cinderella retelling which is what drew me to it in the first place. This book wasn't a retelling at all which is a bit disappointing for me. Other series have managed to build off of one fairytale and create their own imaginative worlds (ie The Books of Bayern by Shannon Hale) but this book just didn't do that. It went from a strong, independent female character in the first book to about one of the dumbest characters ever in this one. Our main character is super naive, which is fine I guess. I'm a naive person too. But I'd never just walk up to a palace and expect to be made the princess just because I said it was so. "But I'm the true princess!!" Shoot me. I just could not with this book. The characters were dumb and most of them literally had no brains. Young, old, middle-aged, they were all morons alike! The only smart and tolerable character was Ella, from the first book and Harper who was completely mistreated if you ask me. I just couldn't enjoy this book with it's lacking story and characters. And everything was just resolved so easily and in a way that I don't believe in the slightest. I'm pretty sure that ending would never happen in a million years.

I literally I forgot I finished this book the same day I finished it and had to stop and think about it for a second to remember. Obviously it didn't find it very good. It hurts my soul to give on if MacLeans book anything less than 3 stars. She literally wrote my 3 favorite romances ever! And yet this book happened... the characters were so lusty to an obnoxious point and the insta love was galore! I'm sorry but I just don't see somebody falling in love that quickly since she was already "in love" with somebody else the week before. And it has one of my biggest pet peeves in the epilogue too. All in all I thought this book was a giant mess with idiotic characters and I couldn't have been more disappointed. I just couldn't enjoy it.

Boring Characters

From the first few minutes I started bargaining with myself into listening for an hour everyday. What an awful way to feel about the story in the first impressions of the book!! (I usually listen to 2-6 hours of audiobooks a day) I tried it for 3 day and got 3 hours in and just wasn't enjoying the book at all. The characters were just so bland and I didn't see the reasoning behind any of their ambitions. Why was this little girl so obsessed with this rude, horrible prince? Why was the prince so selfish and self absorbed? And what he does to his father... I just couldn't stand all the awful pointless characters and finally decided that this book wasn't for me. Also, why the insta-love? That's what I'd call lazy writing. DNF'd after 3 hours. I ended up reading reviews from other people on goodreads and am glad that I didn't finish this book as I'm sure I wouldn't have liked it any better as the book went along. The narration was okay but didn't wow me in any way.

I read the 3rd book first a few months ago and fell in love with it, then I listened to the 2nd book a few weeks ago and really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book and was really let down by the ending and how the characters resolved things and I had much the same experience with this novella. I loved 85% of it and it was going to get 4 stars until that last 15% which I didn't enjoy at all. I did love getting to see how Lydia is doing and getting her own story! So it gets 3 stars as I still really like it and I will for sure be continuing on with this series very soon. But the narration was perfection!
