A Heartbreaking Story
Revisado: 09-08-23
The most well written and important story that I've ever had to force myself to continue listening to. A large part of me did not want to understand the holocaust that intimately, I am ashamed of that. If they could endure it and some survive it and learn to live as good and kind people, then the very, very least I could do is to listen to what they had to teach me. In an extremely painful way I leaned several important lessons that i know have changed some of my previous thinking. I will never forget.

Terrible Sexually Violent Book
Revisado: 05-27-23
If you are sensitive to men being violent over women, please do not buy this book I'm only 1 third of the way through this book and it is giving me nightmares. There is no indication of such content in the synopsis, only of poverty and suffering during the depression. I am angry that Audible gave no warning and refuses to allow me to return the book. Worst book so far.

First it was great, then it really was not.
Revisado: 05-07-23
This book is incredibly well written. The story was compelling and as an avid and voracious reader of WWII historical fiction, I learned a great deal. Until about three quarters of the way through the book, I was going to rate it among my top 10 books ever. I do understand that in books about war, characters, sometimes important characters, die. but in this case, it was too much and ruined the story for me. There were other characters that could have died and made the same point. Then the end of the story was very rushed. Very disappointed. Where were the editors? It could have been SO MUCH better. Now I'm afraid to read more books by this author. I don't want her messing with my head like that again.

In my world, a bride can be given...or she can be taken. When Winter O'Brien was given to me, she thought she had a say in the matter. She was wrong. She is my bride. Mine to claim, mine to punish, and mine to use as shamefully as I please. The sting of my belt on her bare bottom will teach her to obey, but obedience is just the beginning. I will demand so much more.

Absolutely the worst narration I have EVER heard.
Revisado: 05-01-22
If you are looking for a DD novel, a spanking story, or just dominant male story, THIS is NOT it. This is a really boring mafia story with no likable characters. The female gets a few beatings that end in sex. She defiantly can take a beating, but this is not spanking. She is constantly breathless and mostly brainless. He sounds like the Godfather.

Great story. Complex characters 1918 to 1945
Revisado: 04-04-22
Great read. Multiple complex characters in and out of Ireland, Britain and Germany. Only problems were the bad French accent and multiple French sentences that were never translated.

Revisado: 02-16-21
The book ended the year that Hamilton died, leaving Elisa in debt with seven children. One was still an infant. She lived nearly 50 years longer. Since this book was written from Elisa's point of view, I want the rest of her story.

Historia
Writing about the rhythms and textures of what it means to live in a body that doesn’t fit, Rebekah reflects on everything from the complications of kindness and charity, living both independently and dependently, experiencing intimacy, and how the pervasiveness of ableism in our everyday media directly translates to everyday life. Disability affects all of us, directly or indirectly, at one point or another. Sitting Pretty challenges us as a society to be patient and vigilant, practical and imaginative, kind and relentless, as we set to work to write a different story.

In My Top-Ten Books Ever List
Revisado: 10-20-20
Rebekah and I have had an incredible number of similar disability experiences, even though our life experience has been very different. That shocked me. I thought two people with very different disability levels, families, and careers. would not have had not only so many disaIbility reactions from family, friends, and strangers that are similiar, but feelings about those reactions that are amazingly similar as well.
She brilliantly describes, what it is like to be different in every setting. To feel normal until people and circumstance tell you that you are not. To need help but don't think you deserve it. To want access instead of help. Absolutely the best description I have ever heard of how it feels to be physically limited and visually different.

A place you will never forget. Rosamunde Pilcher's Scotland...where the fields flourish with greenery, the bills bloom with purple, and the lochs glitter with the bright blue of the sky. A time you will never forget. September...when the heather is in full flower, the first chill of autumn cools the air, and the countryside stirs with the hunt, balls, dinner parties, and dance. Rosamunde Pilcher's September...a story of homecomings and heartbreaks, friendships, betrayals, forgiveness, and love.

Ranks in my top 20 lifetime.
Revisado: 07-07-20
My favorite type of story has: 1. Multiple complex characters. 2. Includes historical inforation. 3. Is multigenerational. 4. Takes place in multiple locations, and lastly all the characters have their loose ends tied up at the end. This book had all those things in abundance.
I think "September" needs to be listened to rather than read because of the accents and dialogs. I almost didn't get this book because so many people disliked the narrators voices for the characters. I loved it.I hope the reader sees my review and takes heart. In real life, some people have irritating voices. The reader made the story more real that way.

It was whispered all through London society that he was a murderer, that he'd spent his youth in an asylum and was not to be trusted - especially with a lady. Any woman caught in his presence was immediately ruined. Yet Beth found herself inexorably drawn to the Scottish lord whose hint of a brogue wrapped around her like silk and whose touch could draw her into a world of ecstasy.

Silly, Stupid, Dumb
Revisado: 06-05-13
Would you ever listen to anything by Jennifer Ashley again?
No. The idea of the plot was interesting, but every time anything interesting began to happen, a steamy childish sex occurred with mad passion being the only emotion. It was like one of those 1950's musicals where normal life events are going along, and then suddenly the characters start singing and dancing, and then when they finish, the story starts again.
In this story, it was sex instead of music being inserted into scenes, and like the music in good musicals, the sex scenes were interesting enough as stand-alones, but they often just got in the way of the plot. I like a good sexy book, but I thought that in this book, a serious interesting topic was going to be explored in a historical fiction format.
The story was ostensibly about how the behaviors that today are diagnosed as Autism were perceived and treated few centuries ago. The problem was that the plot kept getting tangled up with its apparent need for suspenseful action and uncontrollable lust. The characters were stilted, one-dimensional, and completely predictable. The interesting plot line just got lost in the lust.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narration was fine. It was the story that was bad.
