Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Excellent as usual from Susanna Clarke
Revisado: 07-24-24
"Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell", a previous work from this author is one of my favorite books of all time so I reached for Piranesi without hesitation. After listening to it I have to say that, although it lacks the scope of Jonathan Strange, it is a thing of beauty. If you love Borges, you will adore Piranesi. Delivery is excellent.

Historia
We have lived with seabirds for at least 300,000 years. From the beginning our view of them has been double, as creatures that are both deeply distant and yet strangely connected to us, both oceanic in what they represent and a mirror of what we are. They stand in for our relationship with nature as a whole. We use them and love them, nurture them and destroy them, revere them and make toys and hats and dinner out of them. It is a pattern that has evolved over history, and our relationship with seabirds has moved through these phases like steps in a game of hopscotch.

Incredible book. Educating and inspired
Revisado: 02-18-19
This book absolutely stands out. It's just extremely well written. Some other books on nature are either utterly dry (mind of the raven) or diverge too much from the topic at hand (story of cod). Other books in this genre are milestones of literature (gathering moss, hidden life of trees). The seabird's cry is easily a milestone. Never again will you look at a seabird as before reading/listening to this book. Just a big wow for me.
As for the narrator, he was quite good, although during couple of chapters in the middle, there are some sentences where he starts on a high note and finishes on a low. It turns into a slightly annoying pattern for a while, but then subsides. It isn't a deal breaker though, you should absolutely buy this book if you were considering it.

At 28,251 feet, K2 might be almost 800 feet shorter than Everest, but it’s a far harder climb. It will kill you on the way up and the way down. Mick Conefrey guides us through the early story of the legendary mountain and the extraordinary attempts that led up to its first ascent in 1954 - these are tales of riveting drama and unimaginable tragedy.

Are you a fan of books on alpinism? Here's one for you, as good as they get - interesting factual and action packed. It provides an overview of expeditions on K2 and their participants. No bs, just good stuff.

Historia
Talk about a fish story! New York Times and Harper's columnist Mark Kurlansky offers "history filtered through the gills of the fish trade." David McCullough, the historian behind John Adams, says Kurlansky's "charming tale" of a "seemingly improbable idea" will change the way people think of the fish and the history.

Mostly history of New Foundland
Revisado: 01-26-19
With regret I can only give it 3 stars. Narration is spot on, but the story could be more gripping. Author has chosen New Foundland fishing industry as a pivot. I couldn't have cared less about it. I'd love to hear more about Iceland, Greenland, Norway, UK and Spain. Some information is not completely accurate. I actually know most of the details of wars for fisheries between Iceland and UK and was surprised to hear this super interesting chapter in history has gotten superficial treatment. It has been mentioned in the book, that there were no casualties in that, but there have been on both sides - notably an old Icelandic engineer, that died after one of the rammings. Nothing has been said about how Iceland used it's leverage in NATO over UK to win all of those conflicts (with some help from US). But what I hasn't been highlighted enough was cod itself. there was some information about the fish, but not very detailed. Apart from that the book is well put together. If you're interested in New Foundland, plenty of recipes (which you're probably not going to use) and some international context then absolutely go for it.

The cod has played a vital part in livelihoods, diets, and health in general — as well as roles in national economies and international wars. Drawing on his love of food and food culture, Mark Kurlansky leaps into history and folklore to explore how this innocuous fish had such an impact over the centuries.

Historia
On January 14, 2015, Tommy Caldwell, along with his partner, Kevin Jorgeson, summited what is widely regarded as the hardest climb in history - Yosemite’s nearly vertical 3,000-foot Dawn Wall, after 19 days on the route. This engrossing memoir chronicles the journey of a boy with a fanatical mountain-guide father who was determined to instill toughness in his son to a teen whose obsessive nature drove him to the top of the sport-climbing circuit.

A recount of someone's anxieties
Revisado: 10-27-18
This is a very uneven book. It's consistently well put, well edited and recorded well. There's a problem here though : in case you wanna hear a good story, be prepared to untangle it from a whole lot of unnecessary details. At least 50% is the author pondering on his anxieties, shortcomings, depressive episodes and marriage. Hidden in there somewhere are good climbing episodes and a very exhilarating chapter on being kidnapped. Author's inner life could be interesting if it was served in reasonable amounts. Here though it almost dominates the wordscape and it can make your day gloomier. I can only recommend it to someone who can plow through other people's self-therapy sessions in search for some cool adventure pieces.
